Habe diese Woche die erste Serie von Mike Flanagan, #TheHauntingOfHillHouse, beendet, nachdem ich ursprünglich nur #MidnightMass von ihm kannte. Weiß nicht genau woran es liegt, aber die hat einfach nicht gezündet bei mir. Ich meine, die ist wirklich großartig geschauspielert, und so aufwendig wie komplex produziert (Träume, Zeitebenen), aber die Geschichte selbst, ergab für mich so gar keinen Sinn. Hatte was von Mindfuck: inkonsistent, überambitioniert und dazu mehr depressiv als gruselig. 1/2

The super natural goings on in #TheHauntingOfHillHouse aren't really what scares the reader in this classic haunted house novel. The truly frightening element is watching the effect the hauntings have on the relationships of the other characters and Eleanor's (the main protagonist) descent into madness. #ShirleyJackson

After running across some damn hilarious reactions to "that moment" in the series (if you've seen it, you'll know what I'm referring to) on Youtube, I'm itching to rewatch this.

NGL -- I didn't expect this adaptation to be so emotionally draining, especially since I didn't actually like the original story (apologies to all Shirley Jackson fans). But I appreciate the way each character's explored in their individual episode, showing how childhood trauma affected them throughout their lives until it was too late (spoiler alert!) for them to reconcile with Nell and especially their father. Also: Mr. and Mrs. Dudley own my heart.

And all that without sacrificing the gothic horror elements and all those awesome ghosts.

Anyway, I need to watch 'The Pale Blue Eye' first (for a Poe worshiper, I'm sadly slow in the uptake where adaptations are concerned).

It's also tampering with the original vision of a #Director #Producer who chose lighting, costume, design with #Black&White in mind. If you don't believe me look again at #Casablanca or the original 1963 version of #TheHauntingofHillHouse or #TheMisfits etc. Colourization is usually to make someone else money, not respect the original #Cinema 😱 🎬

Mike Flanagan leaving Netflix for Amazon felt like a shock, at first. He's made so many great (and scary) shows for them. But the more I think about it, he might be a better fit with Amazon, after all. Amazon gives their series more of a chance to grow by not cancelling them after the first season.
