*The Holy Machine* by Chris Beckett. Incredibly clichéd mash-up of Frankenstein, Logan's Run and 1984. Essentially two stories nicely woven together, with a very satisfying ending.

"Spiro and I went over to Corfu a few years ago. All the resorts are like ghost towns, now. Ruins. All those silly English pub names: the Pig and Whistle, the Dog and Duck. All crumbling away. Like the real pubs back in England probably."
