Like a 30 year old footballers autobiography Cesar’s Gallic Wars are a somewhat embellished account of his 8 year campaign. A move that set him on the path to civil war in Rome and his eventual demise. There are so many other details such as the tribes and politics as well as the logistics of war which make this such a great account of warfare in antiquity.

@ninawillburger I handmade a sudis with an axe and tools that were appropriate for the period and I now feel vindicated that they were employed as I imagined in a tetrahedron formation. my biais is confirmed.

I love the carpentry in this old barn although the original oak beams had to be replaced with cheaper pine the finished work is still impressive.

This is me on a 10km march along the Route des crêtes unfortunately it was all tarmac so my feet were a little chewed up. You can see the video on YouTube youtu.be/sVxYTSrqXSY We don’t know if the Romans carried their shields on the march or whether they were loaded onto miles or carts. It also depends on the type of march, tactical (battle ready) or logistical like a camp move through safe territory. Your load would be adapted to the situation at hand.

My , a commonly carried by Legionaries. This one is an and adze used for cutting wood, other types looked like a modern pickaxe. were builders as well as soldiers which separated them from most armies at the time. They could shape the battlefield to their advantage and fortify weak and exposed positions. Made by

youtube.com/watch?v=yf0fPNZJRZ Testing the Roman Pilum. Hitting the average range of 20m was hard for me but probably easier for a well trained Legionary. The pilum breaks just below the square part of the shaft that holds the tang and rivets.

Caligae, the Roman hobnailed sandal. It is lethal on smooth surfaces but great on any other rough surface. They are quite heavy and the soles are fairly rigid. The upper is made of a single piece of leather sewn together at the heel. I don’t wear socks but there are references to socks. Initially you can expect blisters but your feet harden up quick. If they don’t, it’s because you are weak and not suited to soldiering, you could be a scribe or a cook…..

Started turning this plum wood bowl but the core snapped due to an imperfection. I’ll finish it by hand later. Plum wood has great colour but rarely grows straight and is full of imperfections.

Turning some walnut I rescued from a burn pile. Made a small uneven bowl ideal for beverages or olives.

Still haven’t finished reading this book as I’m always busy. It’s a great book as it covers the day to day logistics and mundane military life that sounds eerily similar to my experiences.

Just weighing up my armour and kit ahead of my next video. My body armour the , weighs 8kg and my helmet, the , weighs 3.4kg. Belts sandals and weigh 5.9kg. Along with other items such as the tunic and (padded jacket worn under the armour) we are looking at approximately 20kgs of equipment worn on the man.

Me with a full load on a 10km march. Based on what I have read from multiple sources, I’ve arrived at a total basic load of 40kgs. If I were to add other items it would be closer to 55kg, possibly more.

The Boudican revolt was actually an early Brexit referred to as Rexit by the Romans. Completely factual…..

Each sudis weighs 5kg My total load is usually 40 kg, so that would be an extra 10kg, a total of 50kg, which is a debilitating weight to carry. The video of me making these is on YouTube.

There is a popular belief that Roman Legionary’s carried two of these, when on the march. Each sudis weighs 5kg My total load is usually 40 kg, so that would be an extra 10kg, a total of 50kg, which is a debilitating weight to carry. The video of me making these is on YouTube.
