Jazztodon artist of the week: Sphere! A jazz super-group of #kennybarron on piano, #charlierouse on tenor, #benriley on drums, and #busterwilliams on bass, this group put out seven critically acclaimed albums between 1982 and 1997. They played tribute to #theloniusmonk on many tracks (naturally, with Charlie Rouse and Ben Riley in the band), but they quickly developed their own unique sound.

Sometimes I like to recommend things in the hope that someone is where I was a year or two ago when I didn't realise that Monk is brilliant and deceptively weird.

Probably hyperbolic to say but Monk feels like the jazz that makes most sense to me. A really strong harmonic and melodic sensibility but also a sense that the room has too many walls and you've never noticed and the windows are actually water.

Now this is really exceptional stuff from an incredible line up: #ArtBlakey, #ColemanHawkins & #JohnColtrane.

& the music is white hot: Well, You Needn’t, & Off Minor being favourites. Whilst I love Monk It’s Monk’s Time - this is probably my favourite of his albums.

& #RyanKSmith has done a bang on job with this cut - rich & dynamic.

Figuring out that the transposing the Alto Saxophone to concert pitch is just a matter of pretending you’re in the bass cleft in E flat (on top of any extra key signature things.) has been a boon for helping my daughter out.

Now, if only I can convert her to the gospel of #TheloniusMonk , I could have some real talent here.

The feeling of finally getting to 3/4s of the way through a tough piece of music only to find the last 1/4 is a repeat of what you know is hard to describe.
