69 Love Songs is a towering achievement, an extraordinary mix of genres and times, full of humour and pathos, cynicism and affection
And yet there must always be a track, especially amongst so many songs, which is a bit of a duffer. To my mind, that's Queen Of The Savages. It has always felt to me a misjudgement, a nod to and wry arched eyebrow at theatrical songwriting either side of the war, that falls rather flat.
None of this takes away from the genius of Stephin Merritt's masterpiece. It's just a misstep.

Like many people of a certain age, my first encounter with music on the internet was Napster, way back when. #ThatFirstTime I tried looking for something, I'd recently read about the Magnetic Fields' new 69 Love Songs in the Melody Maker and decided to see if I could find any tracks.
And this is what I found. All these years later, I still listen to the 69 Love Songs more than pretty much any other album.
Plus, I'm kind of chuffed that my first internet song was something so gloriously queer.
