#Rhoda s1e11 (1974) - 6/10

1️⃣ 11 weeks in, and Rhoda is now almost unrecognisable as the character we all fell in love with on #TheMaryTylerMooreShow. Here, for example, she and her husband face a pregnancy scare.

2️⃣ First episode where we spend a lot of time with Joe away from Rhoda. Also the first episode where Joe is likeable.

3️⃣ #BeverlySanders is back as Susan. Very funny lady.

✅ This is very much a middle-of-the-road episode. The story - Mary and Sue Ann are in Chicago - is thin, there are some chuckles and some observations on Sue Ann's (well-concealed) loneliness. It's fine, but there are no great moments in it.

📺 Fall 1974: CBS aired the show on Saturdays after #FriendsAndLovers; before #TheBobNewhartShow. Against it, ABC had #KungFu while NBC aired #NBCSaturdayNightAtTheMovies.

Doesn’t work.

1️⃣ The main joke is that, after having a big fight, the gang are forced to have a fake Christmas dinner on the set of Sue Ann’s TV special.

2️⃣ It’s just weird seeing these character genuinely angry at one another. There are some laughs, certainly. But not enough to justify this story idea. And the cause of the fight is left unresolved.

#GetSmart 024 (1966) - 8/10

1️⃣ Plenty of laughs in this one. The various situations (traffic cop, airport security, KAOS cabin) are used to great effect. Max is even shown to be a (fairly) competent agent at one point! Both 99 and Chief are out in the field with him for the whole mission. Not much reliance on catchphrases, but plenty of good physical comedy.

2️⃣ #TedKnight (#TheMaryTylerMooreShow) guests as the main baddie, and #MiltonSelzer (#TheFamousTeddyZ) is back once again as Parker.

2️⃣ Ted reckons any man who isn’t making moves on Mary must be gay. Meanwhile, married Phyllis is jealous because she was “dating” him first. As friends.

3️⃣ The funniest scene is probably when Mary confides in Lou. And Murray. And Ted!

1️⃣ Airing on Monday October 28, 1974, this one-hour wedding episode broke several television ratings records.

2️⃣ It contains a lot of location filming, with #ValerieHarper running through the streets of New York City. In a wedding dress! And all done for real.

3️⃣ Most of the cast of #TheMaryTylerMooreShow appear: #GeorgiaEngel, #MaryTylerMoore, #EdAsner, and #GavinMacLeod.

4️⃣ All the best lines go to #ClorisLeachman and #NancyWalker.

1️⃣ #DavidLloyd’s script is hilarious, #BettyWhite’s delivery is astonishing. Every line she utters is brilliant. A masterclass.

2️⃣ The gang are preparing for the wedding of #Rhoda (#ValerieHarper) when someone (#LindaKelsey from #LouGrant!) shows up looking for a job in television.

3️⃣ Everyone gets a chance to shine, but nobody outshines White as Sue Ann fights to keep her job. I pressed rewind several times to rewatch her scenes.
