#theMountainGoats announced a new album yesterday called Jenny from Thebes.

There's a song on their 2002 album, All Hail West Texas called Jenny.

For the past 20 years, there's been great debate in the Mountain Goats fan community as to whether Jenny is a person or a motorcycle. When I lived in Brooklyn in the early aughts, one of my neighbors named their yellow & black Schwinn Cruiser Jenny, the deepest on inside jokes.

A whole album about Jenny is being called a sequel. But since releasing that album, John Darnielle also wrote 3 novels. So to me it feels like he's doing what fiction writers often do: expanding a short story into a novel.

It's a comforting feeling to know that whenever things get too much, you can go to #Bandcamp and #theMountainGoats will have released another six or so new albums.

Utterly lukewarm take: John Darnielle is a better songwriter than #TaylorSwift , but neither he nor his work are as marketable.

On the one hand, I can’t sleep and it sucks.

we’ve been on vacation for the past week, the last bit at a tiny lake house in rural Ohio: hammock, shady tree, nothing else to do but read.

My 2023 reading goal is 10,000 pages and I plowed through a 1,000 of them in the past week, Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead a significant chunk of that.

it was really fucking good. Over 600 pages, she builds a voice for her character, and stays true to it without once veering into cliche.

Even though, the Mountain Goats fan I am, I kept spotting themes and stories that he explores in his lyrics: Fall of the High School Running Back, the Alpha Couple songs, really all Tallahassee.

so yeah, I fucking loved it. and most importantly, it’s given me a newly found sympathy and hope for the people we coastal elites are told to sneer at and hate.
