The thing about writing is that to write is to lie. Writers are good liars, poets are good liars, actors are good liars, aphantasias are not! In my experience, I’ve learned that I better write about what’s happening at the moment or what I saw or experienced in the past as happened. It did work and I was able to write Iamb. Cheers.

I’m almost finished with my second poem. They’re not yet the way Mr. @stephenfry taught me in his book 🙈 but I needed to write it down. I’m sad and lonely. I’d to cope with these feelings somehow! And what’s better than words. So, yeah, both poems are dark 🌑.

Ladies and gentlemen. I am very honored to declare that I wrote me a poem. Some verses are good some are well let’s say awful is considered a euphemism towards them. It’s pretty crystal clear that i’ve pathetically tried but I am proud I’ve achieved sth before the New Year. I’m ganna leave it for a weak or two and improve it later.

I was reading some poetry when I came across this poem. I think it’s a good example of Iambic meter but before reading it remember Fry’s Trinity or the Holy S:
Savour
Serene
Stationery

There’re an other binary feet named trochee which acts exactly opposite of iamb. That is, the accented syllable follows an unaccented one. Like IT will or DAIly. Spodnee is another binary feet which means having two accented syllable however when two unaccented syllables come together we have Pyrrhic foot.

Iamb. Something I heard a lot in school but didn’t pay attention to!
It’s actually the binary feet we learned so far like “ti-TUM”. An unaccented syllable follows an accented one. I’m sure you’ve heard this:
“To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.”
(Ulysses by Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1892))
That’s a perfect example of iamb.

The second one is The Waking by Theodore Roethke (1908-1963). I think the whole poem has a similar rhythmic pattern but since I’m not sure I’m just ganna write the first three verses:
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.

So I picked up an old poetry book of mine trying to track down what I’ve learned in a context. The first verse of The Eagle by Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1892) has the same metre:
“He clasps the crag with crooked hands”

(1/5) Place 2 of your fingers on your neck. Get your pulse. Feel the beat, sense the flow, notice the rhythm … you’re alive.
Poems are alive too in the same manner. There’s a beat, a rhythm. A rhythmic pattern.

Sth I’ve understand is that no matter what you decide, no matter the path, the first step is always easy but the next step is a goddamn b@&$! It’s a shrewd, repulsive, cunning creature who’s ganna teach you beyond your wildest dreams. This Is The Next Step.

Sure, some prose have rhythm in a very witty, crafty, lively manners like The Waves by Virginia Woolf or some of Oscar Wilde’s works but, here, the focus is solely on poems.

Poem is different from prose so is stress from pitch. Stress comes naturally in speaking. Pitch, however, you yourself put an emphasis on it. Read this sentence: i didn’t kiss your dad. Now for the emphasis I’m going to capitalize the words (usually in prose this happens with italics). I didn’t kiss your dad. i DIDN’T kiss your dad. i didn’t KISS your dad. i didn’t kiss YOUR dad. i didn’t kiss your DAD. The awkwardness is different in every sentence, right?!

As someone who has learned English as a foreign language, I should be more careful with the stress. Better to have a dictionary on hand when I’m far from Fry’s ties!
