I just finished watching #TheOuterLimits (1995) S01 E04 "The Second Soul" and was struck by how similar it was to #DoctorWho (2005) S01 E03 "The Unquiet Dead".

#AllStarTrek That really was an exciting two parter, full of action, intrigue, double crosses (was #Phlox working for #Section31 as well?), weird science, and the deployment of a goddamn bioweapon by Dr Phlox at the climax - whoa!😳😖👍

I'll say it again, I find it difficult to include this as Star Trek, but it does work as a really interesting (or nutty) #TwilightZone or #TheOuterLimits series.🙂

#AllStarTrek I'm sure I've seen these first few episodes of #StarTrek before, but with #TheManTrap and #CharlieX, the show feels more like a futuristic #TwilightZone or #TheOuterLimits. It feels much less like a sci-fi adventure show.

If you're a #SciFi nerd like me and aren't fully aware of who Naren Shankar is, let me try to give you a bit of a primer. He earned Bachelor's, Master's, *and* a PhD in Applied Physics & Electrical Engineering. Upon graduating he joined the writing staff on Star Trek: The Next Generation as an intern in the fourth season and a full staff member later. He's credited with writing several of TNG's best episodes (The First Duty, The Quality Of Life, Gambit) as well as a couple of less-than-great ones. He wrote a couple episodes for DS9 and one for Voyager, though I don't think any of them were particularly noteworthy.
He seemingly has had a hand in a significant chunk of sci-fi culture since his time on Star Trek. He was a writer and producer on The Outer Limits for a while and executive produced a season of Farscape before moving on to be co-showrunner of CSI for the better part of a decade.
As far as I can tell, his most recent contribution (and maybe greatest), was as showrunner for The Expanse. Ty and Daniel are genius writers, and their involvement was no doubt critical to making that show what it was, but no less critical was Shankar's input. I don't agree with every decision he made in the adaptation, but I also think nobody could have done it better. The three of them working together created a nexus event to produce what might be the best scifi show ever.
