I don't know why, and it's not always true of me, but I tend to be a back catalogue explorer and have found a couple of gems I missed on HBO amidst the pandemic shutdown.

#RUN with Merrit Wever, who I found likable in Nurse Jackie but I loved in Unbelievable with Toni Collette. Interesting premise, non-conclusion.

And now #TheOutsider, a Stephen King how-the-fuck-could-I-have-missed-this series. So good, and I love that Jason Bateman directs after his (central) character is killed off.

In my opinion it is very hard to translate any Stephen King novel into film, but HBO did not do a bad job with this one. Cynthia Erivo was spot on as Holly Gibney

『アウトサイダー』E10。すごい。いや、もう、すごい。安易な怪奇に落とし込まず、かと言って安易なリアリティーに寄せることもなく、それでも人々が一応安心して暮らせる日常を取り戻すために秩序を回復しようとするプロセスがすごい。もちろん、そういうホラーがいままでになかったわけではないけど、にしてもその描写の執拗さがすごい。そして、これまでいろいろと抑圧してきたあれやこれやについに着火するわけだから、うーん、いやはや。よいドラマでした。

「息子が生まれた日に「15年前に死んだ母親にも息子の顔を見せたかったなぁ」と思っていたら、ラジオから母親が亡くなった日に家で聴いていた音楽が流れてきた。これをどう解釈するか？」という問い。
いま彼らは超自然的な、おそらく怪物めいた何かを探ろうとしているので、つまりこの問いの意味は「人間の手に余る非科学的ななにかがこの世に存在し、かつそれらは人間に接触してくることはあるのか？という問いだったはずなのに、それを「ただの偶然だ」で済ませた。
結局彼らにとっては合理的な推論を積み重ねた結果として超自然的な存在を見出したのだとすれば、常識的にありえないとしてもそれが真実なのだろう、って考え方なのね。登場人物たちの立ち振る舞いにもそういう葛藤が表れているのでとても楽しいです。いいドラマだなぁ。

『アウトサイダー』E6。綿密な調査で数々の証拠を集めてロジカルに検証した結果としてとても不条理な結論が立ち上がるの、レムみがあって素敵ね。そしてこれまでは抑圧的に演出されてきた数々の怪異がぶわぁっと吹き出してきた。いやー、これはおもしろすぎるでしょー。
