Finally, finally, FINALLY picking my way through 'The Pale Blue Eye' on Netflix. Middling reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but I don't care -- really loving the dim, monochromatic aesthetic, and anything 19th century gothic gets my full attention.

On the other hand, I'm giving up on 'Cabinet of Curiosities' largely because the episodes are way too gruesome for my taste. In some instances, the violence and gore feel gratuitous and really disappointing. I'd love to go back to old school horror where atmosphere reigns supreme.

Restraint is such a difficult thing to manage.

Another Netflix flick met with "mixed" reviews, what's new? Well, this time I'll be on the "noice" side of the mix. I loved the scenery, the tone and the dialogues. The kind of dialogues which would likely sound pretty ridiculous with another cast, but we're into something with this. Not just with (of course) Bale, but the secondary characters and Harry Melling in particular, away from the Harry Potter cringe and into a remarkable E. A. Poe; he's really come a long way.

After running across some damn hilarious reactions to "that moment" in the series (if you've seen it, you'll know what I'm referring to) on Youtube, I'm itching to rewatch this.

NGL -- I didn't expect this adaptation to be so emotionally draining, especially since I didn't actually like the original story (apologies to all Shirley Jackson fans). But I appreciate the way each character's explored in their individual episode, showing how childhood trauma affected them throughout their lives until it was too late (spoiler alert!) for them to reconcile with Nell and especially their father. Also: Mr. and Mrs. Dudley own my heart.

And all that without sacrificing the gothic horror elements and all those awesome ghosts.

Anyway, I need to watch 'The Pale Blue Eye' first (for a Poe worshiper, I'm sadly slow in the uptake where adaptations are concerned).

MOVIE QUOTE OF THE DAY:
“There is a very disturbing pattern here, Poe. Men who cross you end up on the wrong end of the noose with rather important organs carved from their chests.”
Christian Bale in The Pale Blue Eye

Recommended: Netflix's , in which a former policeman investigates a grisly crime at the U.S. Military Academy in the winter of 1830 with the help of a first-year Army cadet, one Edgar Allan Poe.

I completely failed to notice that was Charlotte Gainsbourg in The Pale Blue Eye.

(I also didn’t recognize Gillian Anderson).

It’s a rather silly movie, but worth watching for the scenery-chewing and the bleak landscapes.

This is why it’s wonderful there is a whole big world of content, because vary

I enjoyed and would recommend it. Is it life changing? Nope. But IMO it was a decent enough flick.

But someone who doesn’t like Christian Bale probably won’t like a movie starring Christian Bale.

is a waste of time and talent (Charlotte Gainsbourg! Toby Jones! Gillian Anderson!).

There's something about Christian Bale I've never liked (I get this from some actors for usually no specific reason) but figured my love of Poe would make watching this worth my time.

I was wrong.

This is a fail, don't bother.

Just finished The Pale Blue Eye. Very intriguing! If you watched it, I'm curious to know what you thought (without spoilers for those who haven't seen it)

🎬 The Pale blue eye (🇺🇸 2022) est un film de Scott Cooper avec Christian Bale, Harry Melling, Simon McBurney, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Robert Duvall et Gillian Anderson d’après le roman (🇺🇸 2006) de Louis Bayard.

 imdb.com/title/tt14138650/

Prompted by @blackbatflower micro review, I watched last night with high hopes of dozing off, which failed. The film wasn't fun or mindblowing but it ticked my boxes - the dreary winter gothic atmosphere, great performances by big names in supporting roles, and probably the best embodiment since . It was slow burn, but worth watching. Actually, I could watch and listen to as Poe for hours. 🥰

Watching . Harry Melling is fabulous as Edgar Allan Poe. I was almost fooled into thinking Eddie Marsan was the weird old book guy until he spoke and I realized it was Robert Duvall under all that makeup.
