In , the days of the new and full moons especially are days devoted to religious practice, which is observed by refraining from sex and drinking, theft and killing, gossip; fasting from noon, until the next morning; going without music, dancing, entertainments; not using makeup, jewelries, and perfume; and sleeping on the floor

These holidays are called Uposatha days, and I enjoy observing them

Being Tranquil and Having Wisdom, by Ajahn Chah
I’ve often taught that tranquillity is stillness; flowing is wisdom. We practise meditation to calm the mind and make it still; then it can flow. In the beginning we learn what still water is like and what flowing water is like. After practising for a while we will see how these two support each other.

Brothers and sisters in suffering, old age, sickness and death, by Ajahn Sumedho
If the Buddha had started with the teaching that there is no suffering, none of us would have believed it: There certainly is! He certainly got that wrong! So he started with: There is suffering...

suffering is born of desire.
By the removal of desire,
misery is removed;
by the removal of misery,
suffering is removed.
