It would be more accurate to describe #MachineLearning as “data-based machine calibration”: fine tuning sophisticated machinery by feeding data to it to calibrate its internal configuration to fit the inputs and ready it for use. I just went back to Herbert Simon's argument that 'intelligence is just symbol processing' where he "establishes" that the brain (and the mind - same thing, he sees no difference!) is really just an information processor... it's really something. No wonder that Churchman called it "The Artificiality of Science" in his book review.

While this whole field is certainly interesting and inspiring perhaps to look at,

there s a lot of confusion here,
a lot of projections going on -

we wish to see something like "thought" in computers
(there isn't, and we shoudn't use the term),

we are starting to suggest that our own brains somehow work like computers (they don't),
that thinking might be sufficiently explained by the firing off of neurons, ...

yes, i asked that #Lora question to test some standard knowledge i d ask about in my course.
my colleagues at #university are getting nervous about chatGPT - as much of the #academic world, which says more about the academic world than it says about so-called "AI".

in this case, #chatGPT just fails miserably.

i must admit we provoked it with the slightly nonsensical (but not uninteresting!) question whether one could operate a good old vacuum tube in space, without its glass housing.

yes, already happening.
the big underlying problem is that we constantly mistake "sounds plausibly human" with "is intelligent" ... that s what we optimize (thanks, turing test), so what we re creating is just an ocean of garbage.
which then recreates itself in humans.
