Since April I've been able to receive British freesat TV. Thanks to the quite wonderful channel #TalkingPicturesTV I can watch #RogerMoore as #TheSaint, a show I've never seen before. Moore was "my" #JamesBond when growing up and seeing him here I can understand why. Tall, broad-shouldered, looks good in a suit, debonair, speaks with an ironic tone, he embodied a certain kind of Englishness or at least its cliché. Others will say his Bond was too funny of course but that's ok.

Blä. The best thing on is #ForYourEyesOnly, featuring the creepiest of the Bonds, Roger Moore.

🤣 I want to slap the smug look off his face every time I see it. I don't know why.

It goes back to #TheSaint, too.

Been watching #TheSaint tv series with Roger Moore for my dinner viewing. Some problematic things that you might expect from the time period, but overall it’s a fun show and Moore’s performance is absolutely charming and you can see why 007 came his way.

Leslie Charteris's The Saint Goes West, a 1942 collection of three Saint novellas. A transitional slightly Americanised version of Simon Templar which for me works less well than the earlier and later versions. But the stories are excellent.

In Leslie Charteris's The Saint's Getaway (1932) Simon Templar is on holiday with his beloved Patricia Holm when he gets mixed up with some stolen jewels.

This is the early version of the Saint when he's a crime-fighter but still a criminal as well, and he's reckless, irresponsible and irrepressible.

A rollicking roller-coaster ride to adventure.

Saint Errant, a 1948 short story collection by Leslie Charteris which introduces a somewhat different version of the Saint.

Simon Templar is now a loner, with just the slightest touch of melancholy although of course combined with his thirst for adventures. The adventures are no longer as outlandish.

Very different in tone from the early 30s Saint stories.
