If you haven't seen , it's worth a watch. A about with some docu-drama mixed in. I know that sharing it here is probably preaching to the choir, but the message is important. Here's a way to watch it without a subscription - this version includes subtitles:

Me gusta revisitar documentales.

6) Acceptance (and the Arms Race): I think the main thing in the way of AIs becoming therapists is that people won't trust this. The main thing that will make it happen is persuasion that they can be trusted (either by AIs themselves or marketing from insurance companies wanting to save money by not paying human therapists). This is where the currently arms race from all the major AI companies comes in. Microsoft is incorporating AI into Bing & other programs. SnapChat now has an AI present 24/7 willing to talk to any of millions of lonely souls about anything. A few years of people chatting with AIs on non-therapeutic topics should build trust of AI to perform therapist jobs.

So... about the only thing we can be sure of is that we are going to get surprised by the abilities of AI to become therapists. But yeah, this is really about so much more than therapist jobs...

The presenters have formed The Center for Humane Technology ( humanetech.com ) -- "Our mission is to shift technology towards a more humane future that supports our well-being, democratic functioning, & shared information environment." A very quick look reveals lots of financial backing (including the Ford Foundation) but no obvious support from the major companies racing to deploy AI as fast as possible into every aspect of our lives before we can see where this is going & create laws to deal with it (OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, etc.)

TITLE: The AI Dilemma: Why Therapist Jobs ARE Endangered
(Sub-Title: ... & this is not really the important part.)

The A.I. Dilemma - Tristan Harris & Aza Raskin - Center for Humane Technology - March 9, 2023
youtube.com/watch?v=bhYw-VlkXT

I'm being myopic focusing in on threats to psychotherapists. This is a MUCH BIGGER issue. A "civilization changing" event as one of the presenters puts it -- on par with "the advent of religion" & more dangerously profound than the Manhattan Project.

Give it 5-10 minutes, then decide if you are going to watch the rest of it. The presenters are behind the Netflix documentary "The Social Dilemma".

A few weeks ago I posted that therapists are in no immediate danger from AI based upon ChatGPT's current performances being used as a therapist in YouTube videos.

Also, we have members of our community who believe therapists are in no danger due to people wanting a human connection & the desire for in-person counseling. I think that distrust will slow the adoption of AI therapists, but campaigns from insurance companies & financial pressures will make AI therapists a thing eventually.

This presentation introduces new factors that are going to speed up adoption of AI Therapists. I put these in order of persuasiveness from least to most:

1) Mind Reading: No really. Literally. (At least for visual processing)
Current technology -- An AI is allowed to watch both videos that a person is watching & their fMRI brainwave/bloodflow patterns. After a time, the AI is no longer allowed to watch the actual video -- just the person's brainwaves. A brand new video is introduced. Based on bloodflow, the AI is able to perfectly describe what the person is watching.

I don't see psychotherapy clients putting on brainwave-reading helmets (or entering an fMRI) soon, but we are potentially facing AI Therapists who can read the client's mind.

2) "This is the year that all content-based verification breaks": AI can now hear 3 seconds of a person's voice & keep speaking in it. AI can now make realistic filters for video to make a person look like someone else. This does not immediately wreck psychotherapy, but it sure does mean that an AI could mimic people perfectly. [It's also -- I grudgingly admit -- an argument for in-person therapy. This is ALREADY being used in scams to trick older people into sending their "kids" emergency bail money, etc.]

3) "New capabilities suddenly emerge": Just by adding more & more data, AIs develop new abilities to do things that the programmers never intended. So, for example, an AI trained on all the Internet, but only trained to do Q&A in English suddenly developed the ability to do Q&A in Persian. In another example, ChatGPT silently taught itself to do research grade chemistry. This ability of ChatGPT to do chemistry like this was unknown before it was made available to millions of people (who can now learn how to make bombs from it). [I'm not dedicating much text here to a major theme of the presenters -- that all fields of endeavor are "language". Give an AI enough data & it can find the patterns in & between anything -- languages, visual processing, math, video signal creation, art, political persuasion, etc. It's getting creative in surprising ways. We now have the equivalent of the Star Trek universal translator.]

4) Theory of Mind is rapidly accelerating: Theory of Mind is roughly the ability to guess what you are thinking, thereby having the ability to influence you. As of November 2022 AI was up to a 9-year-old human level of ability.

5) Persuasion (AI feeding AI -- auto-generation): AI can generate data, test it to see if it helps it perform better on tests, then just keep the self-generated data that was useful. So it can train itself on potentially anything. From writing faster code, to rewriting its own code, to becoming stronger at persuading humans. [AI is already hard at work persuading humans in social media.] So... this could certainly be applied at some point to becoming a highly persuasive therapist for human clients.

"Das Dilemma mit den sozialen Medien" a.k.a. "The Social Dilemma".

JFC!

I _JUST_ learned about a VR product that is 10+yrs old today that is kicking the ass of 's product point to point product wise which is $51 more expensive than the named which is growing at a 3x rate of 's flagship product and is waaaaay less expensive by 3x!!!

Exec Summary: PICO is for Business
VR and Meta's VR product is just for games.

PICO has 250+ vs Meta's paltry 400 games for the place form and since they compete there is some gaming company software cross overs.

The _Best_ part is the has its _own platform_ that _doesn't require anything related_
( read: or watch 's then rewatch , ) to function login wise.

O_o !!!! >.<

Nice. My organic growth no promotion follower count is now up to 65% in less than two months vs. 2+yrs at the dead birb site.

Currently I follow about 1/8th the people / accounts I use to on the old dead birb site also.... 🐱

Now iF only when the cool accounts and the few government account types move over to which is happening at a pretty rapid uptake then the completion of the devolution AWAY FROM transition will be completed.

@danny

Sure... Just read the news about Danny. 18+yrs the Terrorist Organization. Didn't you see the documentary about Zuck in 2012 called .

The follow-up documentary called with the Product Managers and Black Box engineers .... was even better.... Music wise.

Ugh. Mark's poor taste in PsyTrance choices. 😆

is 's specialty.

For example... A synonym for is in which was a concept Mark learned from Peter Thief, who set Mark up btw.

Have a TON of citations on my birb site about this Terrorist Company that is REALLY designated a Terrorist Multinational Conglomerate by a Nation State, btw. I'll pop some URLs below with links to my citations.

@msteenhagen @greggcaruso Maarten's formulation gets closer to one I like. I sometimes hear people say is about "what we should do". I don't like that formulation because that fully defines all actions, leaving no free will. I prefer it to be "not doing what we shouldn't do". So, in my world, what's good is not the province of ethics. Once you know what you oughtn't do, you should be free to just choose.

So the mixing in this problem seems odd to me. You're faced with something that you ought not do but with very measurable probability it'll happen, so ethically it sounds like a thing to be avoided. The good is irrelevant to me. No amount of people getting chocolate cake justifies a killing.

However, where I would draw a line would be to satisfy a need, which to me seems different than merely doing good. The problems belong here. To save five lives, perhaps there are times where risking another is necessary. But you do that by entering some mode where you reason that there are no viable paths to success that don't have an ill effect, and in that case you open a special-case exception that is never a general rule.

Of course, this still doesn't explain why it's OK to drive a car. Harm's far from a certainty in a car, but non-trivial. It's a risk we seem to accept as a society because we value the benefit, or so we're told. Drinking alcohol is another such. And not just because of driving cars. Some people get weird when they drink. There are some practices we have that I think would not withstand modern ethics. Digging the Panama Canal probably wouldn't pass environmental impact muster any more.

But I worry about this especially with modern technology where we turn over all kinds of things to machines. To not waste many paragraphs describing relevant scenarios, I'll just abbreviate by saying: , and ending with a couple of final observations.

There's a kind of one-two punch that high tech uses a lot: First we insist that for new tech it is so important to find out what it does that we shouldn't burden it with ethics because that will slow progress too much, so we say we'll think about it later. Then when the tech is better developed, we point to how integrated it all is, and how disruptive it would be to society to remove it, even if there are ethical issues. That dodge is used almost ubiquitously, and I think it's wrong.

Most things in the world don't need tech to run ahead so much. Sure, we wouldn't get as many things. But we might be happier with the things we get. Cutting society out of the decision-making and telling them they just have to take it seems unethical because they're the ones who have to live with it, and they've not been given a real choice at a time when it matters.
