Track 7 – Full an By/Run her Aff

"... its not so much the Horn itself, but the weeks spent in the Southern Ocean to get there that guarantee you’ll get a pasting’", I was once told.

This pic is one I took from the deck of Soren Larsen steering full and by in the Southern Ocean - in a mere force 9 - in 2008.

6 – Nerthus.

Ancient Europeans considered nature+its forces the work of a god– Gaia, Terra, Njordr to the Vikings; a being of inconsistent mood, a greater force whose tempers mortal creatures must weather as best they can. An uneasy agreement between sailor and nature, broken only by steam power?

The Springbank took 11 weeks to sail the length of the Atlantic, Fair Isle to Staten Island, in 1908.

- Track 5: Da Gobs o June/da Fair Isle Channel.

'da Gobs o May' to Shetland seafarers is a week in May where it feels like winter is back; Sailors may refer to the same thing in June if the weather is poor.

In the Fair Isle Channel, cross-tides and reflected swells from the cliffs of Fair Isle make a confused sea.

Springbank sailed W. through the Fair Isle Channel in June 1908.

Track 4 - Fly Free.

Departures and arrivals often give the most intense emotions of a sea voyage.

Sailing or towing down a European waterway on a bright June day, watching nature and the world slip past the rail, anticipating the voyage ahead.

Wow... Celtic Music Radio are choosing their - and is a candidate!

I'd love it if you went to the link below and gave it a little vote. The other albums feature some pretty amazing stuff, so my hopes are realistic - but would love if you voted anyway...!

In August I walked to Port Glasgow - a stretch of river that was once lined with shipyards sending out steam and sailing ships such as .

Very few signs can be seen of them now; bt it here where Russell's Bay Shipyard once was, filled in in the 1960s, I saw J McKenna's brand new sculpture to the shipyard workers.

Track 2 on my album deals with shipbuilding during its heyday on the Clyde. Listen here:

Brough Beach, Cullivoe - a place where I would often wander before leaving for a 4 or 5 month voyage in my merchant ship days, feeling dragged by necessity or expectation far from the music, people and place I loved.

The background for 'Affrug', track 1 on was recorded here, waves breaking on the stony shore, backwash dragging small stones off the beach.

So happy with this 'Must Listen' review of in Folk London magazine Dec/Jan.

'.. an outstanding album where each track
builds the fascinating cyclical narrative of
a ship and its crew.'

Morning all!

In August I launched an album, based on the passage of this Glasgow built sailing barque, from Hamburg round Cape Horn to Santa Rosalía.

I researched the ship, crew and voyage deeply (during lockdown) and wrote the 13 tracks that tell the story of the passage.

I'd love you to have a listen:

More on this project and the voyage over the next few days..

Morning Mastodonsrs!

In August I launched an album - telling the story of the Glasgow-built sailing barque on a 1908 voyage from Hamburg round Cape Horn to Santa Rosalía.

I researched the ship, crew and voyage deeply (during lockdown) and wrote the 13 tracks that follow the hope, wonder, tragedy and triumph of the passage.

I'd love folks to have a listen:
