Love, loss and soul RnB, sung with piano backing. A lot of these songs are beautifully crafted an produced pop music. Pop music that lasts, rather than throw away tunes that are last year's news. The songs drift between heartbreak, unabashed feminism anthems and plain old love songs.

The album won a bunch of Grammys.

96 - "Original Pirate Material" - The Streets
Rolling Stones Best Albums of the 2000s.

Mike Skinner mashed story telling, British banter-rap and a variety of beats and samples you just about recognize to make this album.

It's a love of clubs, pubs and being a 'geezer' in the early 2000s - it's barely hits self-reflection unlike later material. It's breaks conventions, skips beats and for some tracks it's less rap and more spoken word.

Empty Cans is easily my favourite The Streets track.

The first half imagines a world where Mike (the story's protagonist) is angry and ends up pushing away all his friends.

Then there's a rewinding effect, and it starts again, except Mike isn't as confrontational and the album's story concludes with Mike in a more positive frame of mind.

Interesting exploration on how your mood and mindset can effect your outlook and happiness.
