Was just reminded of '#TheWorldAccordingToGarp because I sobbed uncontrollably when young Walt pegs it as a sacrifice to allow for Garp's personal growth. I remember being so angry with #JohnIrving, for writing what was essentially a literary device, but one that would absolutely guarantee to break your heart. I was sobbing away and saying "How could he!" I felt abused!
I think I finally lost patience with him when l hadn't read any of his for a while, then I read one in which the whole story hinged on the death of a woman with long hair who a (not that young or anything) child mistook for a bear. At that point, I felt Irving had reused his plotting device to the point where it was threadbare and tatty, and no longer held any significance. I just lost interest completely and he did nothing to regain my trust, unfortunately.
