I have been writing for thirty-seven years. Six years in to my career, in 1992, I was honoured and thankful and grateful to win one of my then university's academic awards for my writing: the Australian National University's Grahame Johnston Prize in Australian Literature. In the intervening thirty-one years since 1992 however: crickets.
I use this anecdote to teach students of the wisdom of the incomparable Chrissie Hynde's (of "The Pretenders") advice: stay in the process and ignore the results. I may have been writing for thirty-seven years, but in all honesty, I feel like I am only just now starting to warm up. And I don't give many hoots (well, less than two anyway) about any public recognition I might or might not receive: that's far and away well down on the list of reasons of why I do what I do.
