June 28, 1889: American astronomer Maria Mitchell died at age seventy in Lynn, Massachusetts. The first American woman to work as a professional astronomer, she discovered a comet, which as a result became known as "Miss Mitchell's Comet" and won a gold medal prize for her discovery, which was presented to her by King Frederik VI of Denmark. She became the first woman elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1848 and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1850.

June 10, 1692: Bridget Bishop was hanged at Gallows Hill near Salem, Massachusetts, the first victim of the Salem Witch Trials. She may have been accused because she stood to inherit from her deceased husband, and she was said to own a tavern in her home where shuffleboard was played and minors were served.

June 4, 1925: American academic Margaret Murray Washington died in Tuskegee, Alabama. One of ten children born to sharecroppers, she spent much of her time reading and quickly excelled in school, enrolling in Fisk University, where she completed the college preparatory course in five years and college in four. She became the principal of Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, which later became Tuskegee University, and married Booker T. Washington in 1893. She also created the Tuskegee Woman's Club and merged local organizations with women clubs to help improve the values and liberation of womanhood in African-American women of the Jim Crow south.

Born at Knole House in Kent to Lionel Edward Sackville-West, 3rd Baron Sackville, and Victoria Sackville-Wes, she was a successful novelist, poet, and journalist, as well as a prolific letter writer and diarist who published more than a dozen collections of poetry as well as thirteen novels during her lifetime. She was twice awarded the Hawthornden Prize for Imaginative Literature. She was the inspiration for the androgynous protagonist of 'Orlando: A Biography', by her famous friend and lover, Virginia Woolf.
