We've been recording and watching Dorset: County and Coast on Channel 5 not because we particularly like the county - although we do - but because we knew that a friend of ours was going to appear in an episode. We became friends while spending an afternoon drinking real ale in a microbrewery a few years back. Tracy finally turned up in episode 4 this week, sharing her passion for Thomas Hardy.

Blog updated with a post about how and used the figures of Lady Dedlock ('Bleak House') and 'Tess' of the D'Urbevilles to look at how women who had children outside of marriage were treated in bleakchesneywold.blogspot.com/

Have written some thoughts about Martha Brown, hanged in Dorchester in 1856 for the murder of her husband . A 16 year old Thomas Hardy watched the execution and towards the end of his life started to enquire more about her conviction. Am just getting started on one of the few Thomas Hardy novels I haven't read before. This cover is really quite something. Definitely...of an age.

Here's an amazing bit of literary trivia: Thomas Hardy drove himself to Marble Arch to see a movie adaptation of "Tess of the D'Urbervilles."

> And you, my brother, of another flag
Join with us without borders or delay
Do not go gentle to a deadly scene

got me to a poem:

> "I shot him dead because —
Because he was my foe,
Just so: my foe of course he was;
That's clear enough; although

> "He thought he'd 'list, perhaps,
Off-hand like — just as I —
Was out of work — had sold his traps —
No other reason why.

daily VW: the time got to sign a book for her and he misspelled her name as 'Wolff'

'We can't go far now, [Mrs. Hardy] said, though we do walk every day, because our dog isn't able to walk far. He bites, she told us. She became more natural and animated about the dog, who is evidently the real centre of her thoughts. [...]

'Hardy took my Life's Little Ironies off, and trotted back with it signed, and Woolf spelt Wolff, which I daresay had given him some anxiety.'

@ValBHart I have got to reread Thomas Hardy. I loved how everyone you met in the beginning came back at the end: full circle. I also just loved the names. Farmer Oak has been in my life forever.

tonight's read...one of the things i like about Victorian writers is how their constrictive environment forced them to develop a gift for subtlety--a sidelong approach VW said 'allows one to slip in things that would be inaudible if one marched straight up and spoke out loud.' in Tess of the D'Urbervilles (1891), Thomas Hardy shows us the horror of a murder scene using nothing more than a spot on the ceiling.

I'm not sold on the tacky fotoromanzo-style cover of my copy of A PAIR OF BLUE EYES (1873). And it's not my favourite Thomas Hardy novel. But still, I did enjoy it. The novel is famed for originating the term : chance, coincidence, and heart in mouth moments make for a gripping & ultimately sad & tragic story. It's always a melancholy pleasure reading , who 11 January 1928.

Ready for another ? This week's post on my blog is about Thomas Hardy's "Winter in Durnover Field".

It's an interesting one, as it's written as a sort of mini-play featuring three characters: a rook, a starling, and a pigeon.

As always, the post includes a exercise for learners, along with a few notes & comments.

I just want Ken to make "Return of the native", which is the adaptation he always wanted to do. We've been waiting 30 years ffs.

The way the plot is constructed, this one has a sense of mystery for me, almost in the older, sacred sense, and I’m an American, so I don’t believe in the romance of the monarchy much!
