Relativity of Sequences:
If there was only one sequence, there would be no way to judge whether the sequence was passing slowly or rapidly.

(fictional!)

It's the early noughties. My PR company is part of a global viral marking campaign, funded by the G8, WTO, IMF, WB, WEF etc. They're annoyed by the networked activist movement whose massive global protests keeps shutting down their photo op meetings, and distracting the news media from making them look good. We're tasked with coming up with a strategy for breaking up these networks and keeping them from reforming.

How could we possibly do that?

:

You use an AI to generate an image.
That image inspires you to make an artwork of your own.
That artwork is made by your own hand.

Is your artwork AI generated since it was generated from inspiration gained from the product of an AI tool?

I did a thought experiment imagining what the world might look like for my kids in 50 years. I had to imagine the timeline between now and then. Whether it turns out to be prescient or very, very stupid, I feel compelled to share it somewhere. So, here it is!

What would your imagined timeline look like?

(Timeline follows in comments)

When thinking about traveling into the distant future or past, we tend to dwell on transporting human beings (of all things). Obviously, something smaller and simpler — like a message in a time capsule or some kind of particle beam — would be more doable.

Could it be that people in the future have been trying to contact us all along? What might their communications look like? How would we even know?

A hitherto sighted older peep wakes up one day, inexplicably fully blind. They're not close to neighbours, & they live alone. They have no analogue phone to dial by feel. Their mobile phone needs PIN-unlocking, via sight. Their PC needs morning Suspend-Resume, then pswd unlock [if a blackout occurred overnight, it needs several hierarchies of pswds to get thru; all moot anyway, coz no accessibility SW or HW]. They have pills.

What should they do? 🤷‍♀️

Thought experiment: you are a fedizen (obviously) and you have found two very interesting software projects.

The first one is hosted on , the other on .

You would like to get started with actively contributing, but you have time available only for one project (I know, that's not real life, it is a ).

All else being equal (again, thought experiment), which project do you select?

Feel free to comment.
Boosts for visibility appreciated.

Thought experiment:
Would it be possible to indicate something like 'opening hours' for a server using DNS? Assume browser support (via extensions?)

Idea:
some sites/servers do not have to be up 24/7/365 & waste resources. What if you could announce to a browser: we're closed to spare some electricity. We're back at Thu Feb 10 09:00:00 2023 UTC Leave a message here: answeringmachine@domain.ext

Roko's basilisk is a thought experiment about the potential risks involved in developing artificial intelligence. Its conclusion is that an all-powerful artificial intelligence from the future might retroactively punish those who did not help bring about its existence, including those who merely knew about the possible development of such a being. It is named after Roko Mijic, the member of the rationalist community who first publicly described it, though he did not originate the underlying ideas.

The basilisk resembles a futurist version of Pascal's wager, in that it suggests people should weigh possible punishment versus reward and as a result accept particular singularitarian ideas or financially support their development.

Despite widespread , this argument is taken quite seriously by some people, primarily some denizens of LessWrong.

I recently heard a story about two couples who became a quad. It got me thinking about how, if polyamory became increasingly accepted and eventually legally recognized, how would it change society, economics, politics. So I ran the thought experiment and came up with a result: medium.com/@swilson4995/polyam any thoughts of what else that potential change would affect?

for anyone here on with knowledge of the /#legal system in the US, specifically civil litigation.

My youngest villain just asked: Could someone file a lawsuit against you for something ridiculous like, "I don't like the color of your car?" Youngest isn't asking if the claim is valid or if the suit would be thrown out by a judge as frivolous, merely could the lawsuit be filed in the first place? 🤔🤷🏼‍♀️

The density of water is 1000kg/m^3. Overall, is less dense at 773kg/m^3. Therefore, it is often said that if you could put said into a giant bathtub of , it would float. Sounds reasonable.
But for those of us who LOVE to overthink things, here's a fun article where they've done the overthinking for you! (: Saturn WON'T float).
