Doing things in value and then doing a variety of colors on it to see how it comes out was always a fun excercise I liked to do after value stuff. Just keep the color layer hidden until you think you're done, not bothering with a gamut or anything. Always fun to see how colors can be pushed or pulled more.

Not a great example, but this is actually the image I used to test how mastodon's image posting works when i initially set up this account.
