cbc.ca/news/health/why-insect- Even the ticks get crankier when they’re hot. “A growing body of research underpins theories that is a key factor in the rise of many insect-transmitted conditions.
Scientists suspect higher temperatures are stretching out the season for certain , ..One 2021 lab-based study even showed a lineage of ticks that live in temperate climates are also twice as likely to bite humans instead of dogs as the temperature rises.”

Just a quick reminder that mushroom season = tick season.

Make sure to do a thorough full-body check when coming back from the forest. We found three today despite repellent, long clothes, etc.

Yep, we'd neglected that initially, especially with the warm weather 10 days ago.
And then mountain biking in showery weather is so much better in shorts...

Fortunately we'd brought our sticks over from France. For the smallest it was not good, we had to wait a few hours to remove them... once swollen... :(

We bought others sticks here, but they weren't as good actually, the slit was too straight to allow to grab the tick efficiently.

We're leaving today after a short stop in -ing !
We've loved it, apart from 3 pests:
- . A known one, but see photo below....
- . We learned that they are super common, carrying pathogens less often than on the continent, but still it's annoying to have to scan for and remove a dozen of tiny ones after some short walk even on a path.
- on main roads when .

Ticks are becoming a growing health risk in the UK – here’s why

undoubtedly has had a huge impact on tick infestations

This has been particularly noticeable in colder regions, such as in parts of Canada where ticks had not previously been recorded. In the UK recent milder winters mean ticks are being sighted earlier in the year than normal

Climate change is pushing ticks carrying the deadly CCHF virus to move through Europe. The mortality rate is ~30% within 2 weeks. There is no widely-available vaccine.

I remember seeing billboards my first summer in Sverige saying to get vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), another virus I had never heard about in the US.

New on Entomology Today: Effective and affordable tick management at the community level has long been sought after, but a new study shows the necessary costs remain steep. An analysis of integrated tick management models in a sample 1,000-acre, 320-home community find even a two-part program could cost about $400 per household, with more robust programs raising the price even more. entomologytoday.org/2023/08/17

New on Entomology Today: In decades of surveillance, adult blacklegged ticks have only been found in fall months in Mississippi. But in 2022, 13 adult blacklegged ticks were collected between June and September in locations across the state, the time of year when previously only larvae or nymphs were found. Scientists sharing the findings admit: They're quite puzzled. entomologytoday.org/2023/08/02

"Climate change affects ticks at every stage of their life cycle — egg, six-legged larva, eight-legged nymph, and adult — by extending the length of time ticks actively feed on humans and animals. Even a fraction of a degree of global warming creates more opportunity for ticks to breed and spread disease." apnews.com/article/tickstickbo

Will tick-bite allergy, AGS (alpha-gal syndrome), turn us all into vegetarians and help save the planet?

Unlikely. But the deadly disease has been on the rise in the U.S., causing anaphylactic shock in previously healthy people who consume mammal meat and milk after being bitten by the Lone Star Tick (found mostly in the South and Midwest). And most doctors are still ignorant of the disease.
