Honestly, I think that the US should ban TikTok.

I was in two different stories about TikTok bans this week. Journalists seem obsessed about the topic—even more than the legislators hoping security theater will appeal to voters who want jobs back from China.

To me, the danger lies more in influence than access to personal data. But to admit that would also be to admit that US-based apps like Facebook are a bigger threat given their focus on "news" over dance videos.

If you are wondering how that works, look to Hong Kong. We were there in 2020 when TikTok pulled out. Geo-locked, the app disappeared from the app store in HK and if you already had the app, it wouldn't load anything instead directing you to download #Douyin from China.

Seems the momentum is nearly unavoidable now. Tiktok may well be doomed in the US.
