I just _can't_ with the Scheming Scorn Woman trope. I hate it with the fire of a thousand suns. Both because the behaviour itself is mean, but also because it's such a stinky depiction of women. And I can't in any way see what the appeal is to keep a trope like that in a story. It's just ugly!

I need to see if I can find a written summary of the episodes online, because I can't watch beyond this point.

There seems to be a lot of layers going on here wrt his status as a political entity and how he’s a pawn on the global stage in ways that go well beyond his fated ascension as Demon God.

It’s too specifically laid out to feel like proverbial set dressing.

And I don’t think that’s a coincidence, given they could’ve just as easily made the animal speaking thing not a Yiyue cultural thing.

And they do frame the behavior as ignorant and/or xenophobic. Or at least they seem to.

Like, yes, he can talk to animals and is using it to questionable ends, but the skill is neutral.

One thing that I find interesting in Till the End of the Moon is that while the people are right about some thing being off about Tantai Jin, in that he does have something vying for control over him, they’re also wrong, because some of what they mark as his strangeness is simply a cultural difference.

As such some (not all) of their reaction to him is just pure vanilla xenophobia.
