#Protip for people using #Mona on #macOS: exclude the HUGE timeline database in ~/Library/Containers/com.jonny.mona/Data/Library/Application\ Support/Mona/KJYTimelines/ from #TimeMachine #Backup.
In my case it is almost a GB and it’s one of those things that changes constantly, so you back it up every time. It is hard to imagine a circumstance where losing it would be a real problem.

More updates! I'm feeling really productive today as I have time to deal with some of my own stuff for a while before next week. So… I set up a second Time Machine backup on my server. All using #Emacs, I used #tramp to log into my server, change smb.conf to add the second backup drive, restarted smb with #vterm inside of emacs, and then set up Time Machine's second drive to back up to! Time taken: About 2 minutes tops. 😀👩🏼‍💻

Seems like it’s no longer possible to retrieve an email / browse a mailbox from Time Machine… WHEN DID THAT HAPPENED?

FFS since yesterday it’s the 3rd time Apple’s Time Machine proved it self totally useless.

Lucky me, I can find in #splunk the time frame of a particular email, then #ssh to the server, locate and mount the correct #zfs #snapshot, and finally #grep through my Maildir to retrieve deleted messages.

Thema #mac und #timemachine - wenn man ein ganz neues Laufwerk anschließt (APFS) und TimeMachine mach Auswahl des Laufwerks keine Sicherung darauf anlegen möchte („beim vorbereiten … ist ein Fehler aufgetreten“, quasi Instant), dann kann es helfen den Mac neu zu Booten! Plötzlich geht es dann. Was auch immer da vorher krumm war.

I sit down at the computer this morning to find that Time Machine has silently stopped backing up to either disk since 22:00 yesterday. It's hung in "Preparing backup…" stage again. The only reason I know this is that I've been forced by Apple's terrible software to write a monitor script that detects failures.

Backup software should be the most reliable software on your computer second only to the OS itself. Time Machine quality has never approached that standard.

Nach dem halben Vormittag: #Ventura 13.5.1 mag immer noch nicht via #usbc mit Displays von #LG sprechen und lässt sich auch via #Timemachine nicht auf die Vorversion zurücksetzen. Die beschissene Unterstützung von DisplayPort via Thunderbolt hat mich bereits beim initialen Setup vier Tage gekostet. Was machen diese Suppenkasper bei #Apple eigentlich beruflich? Stabile Betriebssysteme bauen ist es augenscheinlich nicht.

Ich habe gerade dermassen die Schnauze voll von der #Software|Qualität bei #Apple.

Nach Update auf die aktuelle #Ventura findet mein #M2 nur noch einen #Monitor. Okay, wozu gibt es #Timemachine? Wiederherstellung mit zwei Klicks? Denkste. #MacOs möchte neu installiert und per #Migration neu befüllt werden. 2 Stunden mit ungewissem Ausgang. In denen ich Däumchen drehe.

Mit dem überschaubaren Gerätepark, den Apple anbietet, sollten sie doch eigentlich Updates besser im Griff haben. #WTF

#TimeMachine stopped working for some reason. Copying 6 gigabytes takes up to four hours, and then it gets stuck at ‘Freeing Up Space’, even though there is enough room for a full backup, let alone an incremental one.

Internet search didn’t yield any results other than ‘Reformat drive as APFS and try again’. I don’t have a spare drive on hand at the moment, so I guess no backups for me. #LivingOnTheEdge
