AI and Time Measurement & Time Experience by Global AI Ethics Institute

Time is a human invention and relative to its observer. If humans were to develop an AGI, it would potentially be able to invent a new measure of time that would be superior (or even obsolete) to our current measure of time. This new measure…

🧠 Neural activity shapes our perception of time ⏰✨. A study reveals how the brain measures time beyond our daily rhythms, linking it to behavior. 🐀 Striatum plays a crucial role in timing decisions, while other brain structures control movement. Implications for Parkinson's and more! 🌐 [Learn More](go.digitalengineer.io/KY)

Happy to announce a new paper published online/in press by Karli Nave, Erin Hannon, and yours truly on the development of beat perception.

Similar to two earlier studies by Jessica Nave-Blodgett from our labs in 2021, we show surprisingly slow developing development of beat perception into late childhood and adolescence.

We also found some interesting correlations between beat perception and phonological ability.

Hmm... If only there were a way to build a memory that extends farther into the past using way less compute...

I've been here for a few weeks, but have yet to introduce myself! I'm a & researcher at The University of Utah studying & with a focus on how perceptual and emotional processes interact over time using . Lover of all things time and quant. I love and , and enjoy teaching these methods to others.

Struck by this description by James and Husserl and others of how experiences recede into the past like a spatial dimension.
Is this experience general to the human experience or is it maybe a consequence of their culture?
Curious to know if phenomenologists outside the European tradition describe things the same way?

Husserl, talking about temporal compression:
The further we withdraw from the now, ... the greater the blending and drawing
together. ... we observe that an articulated part of the process ``draws together''
as it sinks into the past---a kind of temporal perspective (within the originary temporal appearance) analogous to spatial perspective. As the
temporal Object moves into the past, it is drawn together on itself and thereby also becomes obscure.

Husserl:
To my consciousness, points of temporal duration recede, as points of a stationary object in space recede when I "go away from the object." The object retains its place; even so does the sound retain its time. Its temporal point is unmoved, but the sound vanishes into the remoteness of consciousness; the distance from the generative now becomes ever greater. The sound itself is the same, but "in the way that" it appears, the sound is continually different.

``A succession of feelings, in and of itself, is not a feeling of succession. And since, to our successive feelings, a feeling of their own succession is added, that must be treated as an additional fact requiring its own special elucidation...''

``The fact that Time is a form of our stream of experience is expressed in the idea of equality: the empirical content which fills the length of Time AB can in itself be put into any other time without being in any way different from what it is. ''
---Hermann Weyl, Space, Time, Matter

Noggin needs what X when to be consistent with our experience. Things stay the same as they recede continuously into the past. True for everything we might perceive.

The Bellman Eq solves a problem---estimate future rewards without directly estimating the future---that is not faced by the noggin. We can certainly directly estimate the future (and this certainly does not take linear time).
The brain has temporal memory in most of its regions---it is most certainly *not* estimating the world as a Markov Process.
Spending a lot of time thinking about the we'd get if we started from those observations.
