All that needs to be said about ‘s legacy is that his words will be quoted in support of the oppression of women, LGTBQAI+, & children for generations to come

“I … learned not to build a ministry on leadership charisma (which I didn’t have anyway!) or preaching skill (which wasn’t so much there early on) but on loving people pastorally and repenting when I was in the wrong,” he said. “In a small town, people will follow you if they trust you—your character—personally, and that trust has to be built in personal relationships.”

Don't get me wrong. I really appreciate and I've benefitted from his writing and speaking. I also know he's in a crucial time personally: he's suffering pancreatic cancer, probably terminal.

I want to share Tim's optimism in this article. Yet I wonder if the very way he approaches this in a public forum represents part of the problem.

For one thing, I'm disheartened by how he characterizes the gospel. Quoting:
"The Christian gospel is that we are fully forgiven by God because of what Christ has done, not because of anything we have done."

Is that what the gospel is? It's part of what the gospel is, but does a secularly minded person identify with a need to be forgiven by God? I doubt many are directly aware of such a need. Certainly forgiveness must about more than just forgiveness. What is its point, its telos?

I like to say that God wants us all to join him in his life of love and faithfulness, forever. In Jesus, he has made that a reality. Now we should believe and live into what he has accomplished!

Tim does better here in his "In stark contrast" paragraph. But I'd prefer he be clear that the gospel is not for "protestant Christians" (the phrase he keeps using), but it's good news for the whole world.

If the gospel is good news for the whole world, it's the best news ever. If it just pulls us apart into new, spiritual cliques, it threatens to perpetuate all the troubles our world already suffers. Why would we want that?

We need good news that's good news. Everyone does.

’s in the is that we would read God’s law and begin to see a Person- that we would begin to see God’s and ask for it as a gift.

«Was passiert, wenn man irgendetwas aus der streicht, das das eigene Empfinden verletzt und gegen den eigenen Willen gerichtet ist? Wenn man sich heraus pickt, woran man möchte und den Rest ablehnt, wie wird man jemals einen haben, der einem wider sprechen kann? Das wird nicht geschehen! Man wird einen selbstgebastelten Gott haben!»

RT @timkellernyc@twitter.com “I cannot recommend more highly reading and praying thro the Psalter once a month, using the BCP plan. It took me 3 years to study the psalms well enough so I knew basically what was going on in each one. Then I began getting thro them monthly. Heart-transforming. Nothing like it.”
