Tiny HUGE Mastodon Multi-Tips 🐘✨
Now that I have a blog I largely abused character count and created a GIGANTIC Mastodon Tip for you to read or to share with your loved ones 💚
This is an extensive guide in 12 Steps on How to Get Started with Mastodon and how to quickly get to feel at home using it.
If you want to share a specific section with a friend you are trying to persuade to come join us, you can right-click on any section or subsection and “Copy Link” to that specific section.
Warning: It’s also very nerdy! :blobcatnerd:
Have fun and spread the Fediverse love! :blobaww: :geodesic:

Tiny Mastodon AND Privacy Tip 🔒🐘:
If you wish to have a regular data cleanup of your Mastodon toots (posts), which I strongly recommend, you can use the wonderful Automated Post Deletion feature!
HOW TO ❓
1. On desktop, go to Preferences > Automated post deletion.
2. Select “Automatically delete old posts” on the upper left :nes_fire:
3. Adjust the “Age threshold” on the upper right according to your preferences.
4. Select the “Exceptions” and “Exceptions based on interactions” below according to your preferences.
5. Click “Save changes” on the upper right.
NOTE: This does not guarantee that your toots will be completely deleted from the entire Internet. There are various ways in which there might still remain copies of your data online. HOWEVER, this is a FANTASTIC way to reduce your digital prints and improve your privacy overtime.
6. Magic!✨ and peace of mind 😌

Tiny Mastodon Newbie Tip 🐘✨:
If there are some topics you would rather not see in your timelines anymore, for example a certain Birdsite, you can use Filters! :birdsite:
HOW TO ❓
1. On desktop, go to Preferences > Filters.
2. Click the “Add new filter" button on the upper right.
3. Then you can add things like “twitter.com/” or “Twitter” or “Birdsite” or something else or all of the above! And of course, you can do this with any topics/words that you would like :nes_fire:
4. You can set an expiration date in the “Expire after” section on the upper right if you think you will want to hear about it again later on.
5. You can choose where to apply your Filter in the “Filter contexts” section.
6. In the “Filter action” section, you can select either “Hide with a warning” to see posts containing your filtered word(s) hidden and replaced with one line saying :
“Filtered: {NameOfYourFilterHere}. Show anyway”.
You can then click on “Show anyway” to see the filtered post. (This message might vary if you use a mobile app.)
OR you can select “Hide completely” to not see anything at all in your timelines.
7. Click “Save New Filter” at the bottom.
8. Enjoy! 😌
In the weeks to come,
I am going to retoot some of my older Mastodon and Privacy tips to add the hashtags #TinyPrivacyTip and #TinyMastodonTip so that they are better regrouped together and searchable in the future.
I will also continue to toot new Privacy and Mastodon tips using these 2 hashtags.
If you do not wish to see newer and a rerun of my often space-consuming tips, feel free to use Filters on these 2 hashtags to hide them from your timelines.
I will not be mad I promise 😊👍

Super Tiny Mastodon Newbie Tip 🐘:
Don’t forget to also BOOST (repost) the toots (posts) you like to keep the Fediverse lively! :rainbowdance:
Favorite:
To tell the toot's tooter you liked their toot ⭐️
Boost:
To spread the toots you like so others can see them too! :boost_ok:✨
Tiny Mastodon Newbie Tip 🐘:
On Mastodon, you can not only follow people but you can also follow hashtags!
This is an amazing feature to keep receiving fresh toots (posts) about the topics that interest you.
HOW TO ❓
1. On desktop, type a topic that interests you in the upper left “Search or paste URL” field and press Enter. Type all the words together without space if there is more than one word, for example type “StarTrek” 🖖
2. In the “Search results”, click on the “Hashtags” tab. Click on the hashtag that interests you 🔍
3. On the hashtag results, click on the “Follow hashtag” button the upper right, it is a small icon of a human figure with a plus sign 👤➕
4. Toots using this hashtag will now show up in your “Home” timeline! Repeat with more hashtags as desired 🏠
5. Magic! ✨
Tiny Mastodon Newbie Tip 🐘✨:
If you find not many people Boost (repost) your toots (posts) with photos or memes, it could be because you did not use Alt-text 👁🗨
Adding Alt-text to your images will not only make them more accessible, it will also increase the chances that others Boost your toots! :boost_ok:
HOW TO ❓
Here’s how: https://infosec.exchange/@Em0nM4stodon/109323425237412179
Gentle Reminder 🐘💚
Please friends, for accessibility,
do not forget to:
1. CapitalizeEachWord in the hashtags you use. This helps separate words in hashtags for screen readers.
2. Add alt text to your pictures and memes. It’s okay if the text is short! ✨
Here’s how to add alt text: https://infosec.exchange/@Em0nM4stodon/109323425237412179
Gentle Reminder 💚🐘:
✅ If you wish to warn your own audience about a topic that you deem disturbing, annoying, spoilers, and so on, DO use Content Warnings to wrap your own toots. Here's how: https://infosec.exchange/@Em0nM4stodon/109282181601490676
✅ If you do not wish to see toots about certain topics in your own timelines, DO use Filters to hide these toots for yourself. Here's how: https://infosec.exchange/@Em0nM4stodon/109323462169819778
❌ But DO NOT, tell people in reply they should hide their own toots!
Respect what others wish to toot about.
You have the options to use Filters, Mute, Unfollow, Block, and even Report if a toot is breaking the Server’s Rules.
Stay kind and let others use their own voice 💚

Tiny Mastodon Newbie Tip 🐘:
If you personally do not like nor need Content Warnings for your own reading, you can expand all of them automatically.
You can still add Content Warnings to your own content to protect your audience (this can help from loosing followers), but yourself will see all toots fully expanded 👀
HOW TO ❓
On desktop, go to Preferences > Appearance, scroll down to the section “Sensitive Content” and select “Always expand posts marked with content warnings”.
You can also select “Always show media” in the “Media display” section right above.

Tiny Mastodon Newbie Tip 🐘:
When talking about or recommending hashtag(s) in a toot (post) that is irrelevant to that hashtag, separate the hashtag from the text.
For example, write “# TinyMastodonTip” or simply write “hashtag TinyMastodonTip”.
This will avoid including your toot that isn’t participating directly to the hashtag from going into the hashtag. If that makes any sense... 🙃 #️⃣

Tiny (Big) Mastodon Tip 🐘✨
A few things that will save your mind if this increase in traffic becomes overwhelming for you:
1. SLOW MODE 😌
A Mastodon feature to keep new toots (posts) in your timelines collapsed until you click on the “new items” bar at the top of the feed. On desktop, go to Preferences > Appearance, then enable the option “Slow mode”.
2. BOOKMARKS 📍
To remember a toot you saw and want to Boost (repost) or comment on later on, you can Bookmark it! On desktop, click on the Bookmark button second to right on the bottom menu of any toot. Then go to the “Bookmarks” on the right menu to find it back later on.
3. LISTS 📝
You can use “Lists” to separate the people you follow into categories. For example, you can create a VIP category for the people you don’t want to miss any toots from. On desktop, on the right menu, click on “Lists”, then create a title in “New list title”, click the “+” button on the right. On the profile of someone you follow, click on the “3-dots” button on the right of the “Follow/Unfollow” button, select “Add or remove from lists”, click the “+” button to add them to your List(s). Your Lists will appear on the right side menu.
4. NOTIFICATIONS CATEGORIES 🔔
You can see your Notifications per categories on desktop. Click on the “Notifications” button on the right side menu, then click on “Show settings” on the upper right feed menu. In the “Quick filter bar” enable “Show filter bar” AND “Display all categories”. You can also add/remove sounds per category in this setting.
5. FILTERS 🔇
You can make it so that a specific word, words, or hashtag will be either collapsed and hidden unless you click on it or never even appear in your timelines. On desktop, go to Preferences > Filters, then click “Add new filter”, fill the options you want there. You can also make it temporary if you wish with the “Expire after” option.
6. LOOKING AT MOSS! 🌱
When you get overwhelmed with noise and bad news, I greatly encourage you to browse the hashtags Mosstodon, Mushtodon, LichenSubcribe, CatsOfMastodon, Photography, and more! Simply type these words (or others) in the Search bar and you will find them. You can even Follow hashtags!
7. TAKE BREAKS AND BREATH 🍵
It’s okay to leave and come back later, or take a day or more off from social media! Always prioritize self-care  💚

Tiny Mastodon Newbie Tips 🐘:
About your Profile Page 👤
If you just arrived here,
before following lots of people, it’s a good idea to complete your profile page.
This will increase the chance of people following you back and/or finding your profile.
1. Write about who you are and/or what you like in your profile bio (you can use hashtags there so people can find you). It’s okay if it’s short, but write something 📝
2. Personalize your profile picture with something you like. Don’t just let the Mastodon default, it makes you look like an anonymous bot. And you are not a bot! (unless you are) 🤖
3. You can write an introduction about yourself in a toot (post) and use the hashtag “# introduction” (minus the space). You can pin this to your profile page so it stays at the top. You don’t have to write it right away, but it can help people finding you and deciding to follow you #️⃣
4. Post or Boost (repost) a few toots that you like, so that your profile timeline isn’t completely empty :boost_ok:
5. Then, when your profile looks like a page that represents you, follow the people that interest you. Browse your “Local” and “Federated” timelines as well as hashtags you like to find them. Interact with them. Be kind 💚 Make friends!
6. Magic! ✨
