The US has set a record for the most natural disasters in a single year that have cost $1bn or more, as fires, floods and ferocious winds were among deadly events experts warn are being turbo-charged by the climate crisis.
There have already been 23 extreme weather events in the US this year that have cost at least $1bn.

Hence, there's a possible "tipping point" within, or resolved to, 2019.
Until that graph drops back below 2019 values.
Nice Work, #ACCAP !
“If Cop28 fails to deliver a clear roadmap for a rapid and equitable phase out of all fossil fuels, the advent of the renewable energy era, and adequate finance to the most vulnerable countries, it will be an utter failure.”

More and more scientists are willing to risk arrest, and their reputations, because of alarm over the climate emergency.
“The thing that’s stopping a lot of more scientists from doing this kind of activism is that it’s scary. It’s socially scary, you risk your job, you risk your status among your colleagues, you risk criminal charges. But I know just from having beers with other scientists, that as a community, we’re pretty terrified by our own science.”

I’m not exaggerating when I say if we don’t stop this rampant approval of fossil fuel projects, by 2073 we’ll be living through the large-scale destruction of ecosystems and will have breached multiple tipping points, leading to the collapse of our food systems and hellish heat and fires.

Burning fossil fuels is heating the planet. But if we quit our fossil fuel habit and stop emitting greenhouse gases... what happens then? Answers seem to vary from "global warming will stop" to "we can expect more and more climate change to come". So which is right? And what would it really take to stop climate change and protect ourselves as much as possible?

Africa is witnessing climate extremes. In recent years, southern African countries such as Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe have been hit by deadly cyclones, western African nations such as Nigeria have endured devastating floods and the horn of Africa has grappled with a prolonged drought that has left millions facing food insecurity. All these extreme weather events, experts say, have been made several times more likely by climate change.

Private equity firms are increasingly profiting from cleaning up climate disasters in the US, while failing to better protect workers and often also investing in the fossil fuels that are causing the climate emergency, new research has found.

Heatwaves across the world are worsening air quality and pollution, scientists have said.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has said extreme temperatures are not the only hazard from heatwaves but that they also cause pollution-related health problems.
In their annual air quality and climate bulletin, the meteorologists have highlighted a “vicious cycle” of climate breakdown and air pollution.

Climate scientists say the heat and other extreme weather is in line with three decades of scientific prediction amid humanity’s relentless carbon emissions. It might, in fact, be the tip of the iceberg compared with what is to come.
Next year will probably not only see record or near-record heat, it will also likely see a surge in flooding events. The influence of El Niño will cause the US to experience three times the number of “nuisance” flooding events next year than it did in 2000.

Between 2016 and 2022, banks have provided some $3.2tn to the fossil fuel industry to expand operations in the global south.
Top US banks like Citigroup, Bank of America and JP Morgan Chase have offered trillions to Saudi Aramco, Exxon and other fossil fuel companies for fossil fuel activity in developing countries in regions such as South America and Africa.

As extreme heat scorched the oceans, land and skies, it affected our food system underwater, on the ground and in the air. But the ways that it did so were unpredictable...
If there was any takeaway, it may have been that previous scientific models for extreme heat failed to capture the full scope of what heatwaves of this magnitude could cause – and that farmers, fishers and pollinators should be prepared to adapt to an uncertain future.

In the United States, it is not broadly known that the fossil fuel industry quietly funds a national lobbying campaign that has introduced draconian anti-protest bills in at least 18 states. These laws threaten anyone protesting at an oil or gas facility with huge fines and serious prison sentences; some states even impose criminal liabilities on non-profit advocacy groups that support the protesters. These are really laws of intimidation designed to stop protest before it happens.
