A crane fly in the reeds (there's a book title for you!).
Does anybody know yet what (or if) adult crane flies eat? Their elaborate mouthparts are fascinating. Is this fly watching/sniffing for mates or food? Or just enjoying the sunshine and rippling water?

A large, graceful crane fly, with a bonus ant.
I have trouble taking pictures of crane flies: they don't sit still for very long, they're easily spooked, and they hang out in dim , shady places. This one was pretty cooperative, but I still didn't get any particularly good pictures before I scared it away.
I was impressed by how sleek and silky it is. I don't think I've seen one like this before. So far, I haven't identified it.

“There are more species of fly within the #United #Kingdom than there are mammal species on the whole planet. A single family of flies—the #craneflies ( #Tipulidae)—includes more described species than all #mammals and #birds combined.”
