This week I've been mainly reading, no. 85.

Like all good #arthistory, Sheila Hale's massive (over 700 pages of text) Titian: His Life (2012) keeps on sending you back to #Titian's works. As a social history based biography, Hale explores the social & political context the surrounds Titian as well as his life, contacts & work. But, its a compelling read (for all its length) & is only let down by the paucity of reproductions. It you're interested in Titian, this is a 'must read'!

"Isabella d'Este, Marchioness of Mantua," Titian, 1534/36.

Although believed to be the noblewoman and art patrio Isabella d'Este, there is some debate about the identity of the sitter here. She did commission a painting from him, but she was 60 at the time. This may have been a fantasia of her as young woman...without time travel, we may never know for sure.

As a brief diversion, browsing through a new book on #Titian I was reminded of the story of his famous portrait of Isabella d'Este - while commissioned when she was in her 60's working from sketches & his memory Titian painted this wonderful portrait of her as if she was much younger... flattery, deception or just a miss-dating in the subsequent literature... whatever. Take a minute t gaze at this before your day starts in earnest!

For Monday morning - four times Cupid was *not* in the mood in Renaissance art.

1) Venus Blindfolding Cupid from the workshop of Titian, c. 1566-70 or c. 1576-80.
2) Venus and Amor from the workshop of Hans Holbein the Younger (1526-28).
3) Venus Playing the Lute with Cupid (last quarter of the 1500s).
4) Cupid complaining to Venus by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1526-27).
