My experience in higher ed is that "organizational goals" are usually... maddeningly vague and not actually what drives most decision-making. For example, higher ed often says a goal is to support students, but the systems are architected in ways that may actively prohibit making the changes necessary to really support #TodaysStudents. So I think one of the big challenges/barriers/hurdles in making the case for DG in higher ed is getting leaders to really admit what the goals actually are. (2/2)
@jsolly @KrisOlds And any institution that can perform well on that measure has incentives to invest in maintaining the (able to stay enrolled continuously with a full-time load) student body that will allow them to continue to perform well on that measure, automatically deprioritizing programs that would help more of #TodaysStudents, who increasingly would benefit from more flexible, part-time, and DE-focused program pathways.
#RealCollege is the experience of #TodaysStudents - the majority
Community colleges and broad access public universities *are* real colleges and where most people attend college.
Nearly all college students work and/or care for family. 1 in 5 has a #kid. Many are over 25 and *all* are #adults and #humans first.
Please join me in busting stereotypes & reshaping public perception of #education beyond high school - use the #RealCollege hashtag to share and educate.
