Lovely to see the red poll in #MillMeadows on #TodaysWalk. There is always (?) one that is curious, or perhaps 'on watch', she's on the very left of the picture. So the others can simply keep grazing without worrying about the collie coming up from the woods. He would love to have a go at moving them around the field!
Walking down the hill, through the QEII field, the sunset was improving, but I was distracted by the crunch of dry acorns under foot. At the bottom I walked to the end of the houses and took this picture. #TodaysWalk
Just one trunk cut down, on a relatively lightly used path, when so many others are allowed to fall across much more heavily used paths. Very odd. #TodaysWalk #NorseyWood
#TodaysWalk took me along the Penge Road which leads, in one direction, to #Penge. In the other direction, slightly more suprisingly, it leads to Goat House Bridge.
Sadly, Goat House Bridge has no house on it, nor any goats.
So here's a picture of the surviving length of the Croydon Canal, a slab of stagnant water that sits somewhere in Betts Park, taken from the deep end.
The lighting wasn't ideal for that, but the shallow end is fenced off and empty.
A lovely walk through #LakeMeadows, on the way to Church to fix the latest I.T. problem. It was hot and I was surprised how few people there were in the park. #TodaysWalk
Another sign that autumn is approaching, or is already here. There are only a few small chestnuts on the paths now, they will be too small to be of use. I'm expecting a Lot more and a lot larger in a month or so. #TodaysWalk #NorseyWood
Billy, the dog I walk, was in a hurry today. He sensed his owner was going out, and wanted to be back for his breakfast. So, little scent marking, and ignoring other dogs. We were back 10 minutes earlier than usual, and I forgot to take a picture. #TodaysWalk #NorseyWalk
Wet grass, glinting in the bright sunlight, and dry paths on a warm autumnal morning. The last of the mist is evoporating, it is only detectable in long views. #TodaysWalk in #MillMeadows. Part of this broom has been all but wrapped by a spider or spiders.
Before I had started the walk, I spotted the slowworm by the drive. It was not there when I returned from the walk, so I hope it had slithered away, and not been eaten
#TodaysWalk
For those who've been wondering how the Crystal Palace Transmitter Tower and the Croydon Transmitter Tower differ, #TodaysWalk gave me the opportunity to inspect both of them.
The chief difference, as these snapshots seem to show clearly, is that one of them is further away.
To mark the return of the hard drizzle that's characteristic of nine months of the British year #TodaysWalk took me up the Greenwich Peninsula, the secondmost northiest bit of South-East London.
Although, for almost quarter of a century, I've seen the Millennium Dome lurking in the distance like a spiked blancmange, I've never bothered visiting it before. So I looked at that.
The Chequers looking lovely on #TodaysWalk, as was the Blue Boar, with a nice display of petunias, but the building really doesn't justify a picture. #Billericay
#TodaysWalk took me to the backwaters of Peckham, where I admired the Consort Park Imaginarium.
On the way I came across an cost-effective solution to street clutter that has achieved results more quickly than any number of campaigns, meetings, strategies and carefully-considered reports.
It's not the most democratic approach, admittedly, and landowners and topiarists might not approve, but that's surely just a question of numbers.
I nearly forgot #TodaysWalk which, though easily forgettable, did happen.
So here's yet another picture of Brenchley Gardens, this time with a van in it.
A single buddleia stem, topped by a white bloom was the surprise find on #TodaysWalk in #NorseyWood. No butterflies around this one, do the white bloom look unattractive to butterflies?
#TodaysWalk took me through the margins of Nunhead, where I found an impressive, if thought-provoking, example of Active Travel infrastructure.
In #MillMeadows for #TodaysWalk I spotted these bushes. There are blackberries and rose hips, but with the sun, or me, in the wrong place, the fruits are not as cleanse as they should be. It is definitely harvest time now.
It's thundery outside, and raining, and as grey and cold as Spring, so #TodaysWalk might be postponed.
In the meantime, here's an old favourite from yesterday.
Back to #NorseyWoods for #TodaysWalk. We had one dog, and we're picking blackberries, os looking at the 'hedgerows' a bit more than usual. You can just about make out the huge web over the brambles. It was difficult to picture, and more impressive in real life.
Like many Londoners, I'd long been unaware of the Superloop, a novel initiative billed as a "network of limited-stop express bus routes" stitched into a gigantic circle in order to connect outer boroughs currently ill-served by the hub-and-spoke arrangement of most services.
So, for #TodaysWalk I went to see what it looks lilke.
And, on the way, I found something for #FingerpostFriday, too.
