A magical, intoxicating, even addictive read, with such literary beauty as I've rarely found in a novel, much less a novel that cheekily mixes quirky intellectual caricatures with good old folk #horror

I'm reading Olga #Tokarczuk's new book, the first since her winning the Nobel prize. "Empusion".
It's often compared to Thomas Mann's "The Magic Mountain", and the similarities are clear enough. But Tokarczuk's book plays with horror elements in a darkly humorous war that is genuinely her own, and I have to say that I prefer her book to Mann's so far!

@davidallengreen Invisible Cities and Nights at the Circus are two of my all time favourites.

Last year I read Olga #Tokarczuk's Drive Your Plough Over the Bones of the Dead, which, tho different, I would probably rank with them.

@steveweddle I really enjoyed this one. #Tokarczuk—the nerve!😉—called it her easy #novel and wrote it between other projects. I think one of the other projects was The Books of Jakob (Ksiegi Jakubowe), so she’s not wrong.
