@mkhoury @leidkultur @analyticus @philosophy @gerritbeine Rainer Forst's excellent SEP-entry on Toleration is always an apt philosophical source, if the concept is of interest,

@jonne Ja jos jotakuta kiinnostaa suvaitsevuuden käsite, niin Rainer Forstin SEP-entry on edelleen sekä käypä että erityisen laadukas, plato.stanford.edu/entries/tol.

And finally:

part of a much older and more philosophically sophisticated debate on toleration and coercion than that in Protestant Europe which is often seen as the dominant or even the sole tradition of toleration. A focus on the Mile End passage in Locke’s third letter on toleration makes it possible to explore this wider context of Locke’s case for toleration.

And some more:

Yet Proast’s argument is often accepted as far more compelling than the case Locke made for religious toleration which has largely been replaced by twentieth century versions of Social Contract Theory and theories of rights based on the concept of the Westphalian System.

The abstract continues:

By the time Locke published the Third Letter for Toleration in 1692 London had become a very different city and Locke could expect his riff on the Mile End line to be understood by a reading public whose horizons had widened beyond the confines of their city and parish. He was, by implication, sitting his opponent Proast among the staid citizens that the play had mocked.

Happy New Year to everyone.

I'm starting 2023 with a bit of shameless self promotion. I'm using Mastodon because the whole farrago with the bird site has made me aware of the vulnerability of commercial, centralized social media for academic work.
I have a new article out:
"'All the World is not Mile End': Content and Context of Locke's Letters Concerning Toleration" in Studi Lockiani. Ricerche sull' eta moderna

From a very early age I knew I would never be the 'girl' next door. I was always somehow in the 'other' category. Women, non-conformist, immigrant or just not fitting into cliche gender and or other based expectations.

This is why I love n roll and the it's a place to meet my fellow and I hope this is a good place to do it. and , regardless of , , , , religion and funny and nice very welcome. 🖖

Tone did not start out as a rebel. His friend had asked Tone to suggest some resolutions for consideration at a Volunteer parade in Belfast on Bastille day, 14 July 1791.

Tone produced these:

"1st. That English influence in Ireland was the great grievance of the country.

2nd. That the most effectual way to oppose it was by a reform in parliament.

3rd. That no reform could be just or efficacious which did not include the catholics."
