The more I think about it, there more I find it incredibly funny that #Tolkien turned the English into #Hobbits.
I don't know about you but when I think of the British Empire I definitely think 'Ah, they're just these cute little guys and it's their birthday! A birthday for the little guys!'

Treated myself, these are 1978 hardbacks of lord of the rings, same as I got from the library back then. I’d never bought a copy since because paperbacks felt disappointing after this, with its fold out maps (that lasted a few months in the library before being nicked for some teenager’s wall) #lotr #tolkien

I started off with the observation that both Sauron and Saruman were originally Maiar of Aule the Smith, and came to the conclusion that #Tolkien was influenced by the #ArtsAndCrafts movement.

Et puis rire en lisant la fête, admirer le talent de l'auteur - et du traducteur - pour assombrir l'ambiance lors du dialogue entre Bilbo et Gandalf au sujet de l'Anneau.
Et rire à nouveau grâce à la médiocre méchanceté et la mesquinerie de Lobelia. En riant d'autant plus en m'imaginant avec délice l'interpréter pour mes joueurs. Je vais passer un certain temps devant mon miroir pour me l'approprier. Bilbo, ce sera plus facile.

La fin du prologue évoque déjà la fin d'un monde. Je n'ai pas lu le Seigneur des Anneaux depuis mes vingts ans, et pas dans cette traduction bien entendu, qui date de 2014 si je ne m'abuse.
Mais mon coeur se serre déjà, des émotions ressurgissent. L'immense nostalgie de cette lecture ancienne se mêle à cet imaginaire qui lui même évoque la fin d'un monde.
Un thème très fort pour moi qui ai longtemps écrit sur la disparition du monde rural dans lequel je vis et travaille.
