On #saturday I posted some photos of Old Grace #church on #longisland. In the #churchyard #cemetery, there was this unique #grave inside a low fence with a gate. It captured my #imagination and I thought it was perfect for #TombTuesday. The #inscription on the #obelisk may be found in the alt-text.

Deishar Wood Chambered Cairn NW of #BoatofGarten in the #Cairngorms. Said to be 'an unusual structure' .. 'an aberrant form'. My take is 'beautifully atmospheric'#TombTuesday. More from Historic Environment Scotland here https://canmore.org.uk/site/15460/deishar-wood

The #tomb of John Richard Norris (1859-1932) in #Fairview #cemetery in #culpeper #Virginia. The photos were taken by me on July 8, 2023. The #plaque gives a brief #genealogy of the #gentleman. Unfortunately, though, it appears that I accidentally cut off a few words of the plaque. #geneadons #TombTuesday

On #Saturday, I was able to visit #stjohns #episcopal #church in #oakdale #suffolkcounty #NewYork. The churchyard was locked, but I was able to snap a few pictures over the #wroughtiron fence. #longisland has many of these charming #historic churches—some are in disrepair, but this one appears to be active. #tombtuesday #history #histodons

Der Gothic-Teenie und der Geschichtsnerd in mir sind begeistert über die Entdeckung von #TombTuesday .
Dunchraigaig cairn in Kilmartin Glen Scotland. Bronze age about 4000 -5000 years old. “Excavations in the 1800s found remains of up to 10 people in one cist. Dug directly into the ground and capped with a massive 3.9m stone”. In 2021 it was revealed that Scotland’s earliest animal carvings had been discovered inside the cairn, of two male red deer’s. #TombTuesday #BronzeAge #PreHistory #cairn

Three #headstones of the Bragaw #family in the Reformed #church of Newtown in #elmhurst #queens #nyc The Bragaws were a prominent family in the #newyorkcity area. Some of their papers are in the #collection of #NYU. I could not get closer to the headstones as the #cemetery was fenced and locked. #TombTuesday

At the grave of my paternal #grandmother, in #mountolivet #cemetery in #queens #nyc. I placed this #headstone in 2016, after she had been lying here essentially forgotten for over 80 years. My father, who was a small boy when she died, never wanted to come here despite urging from my mom. I suspect he didn’t want to deal with the complex emotions a visit would stir up. I am retooting as I’ve added a photo of my grandmother. #TombTuesday #Genealogy #Ancestry
