Last Friday the first Maptime Amsterdam since 2019 took place! @shravan of #tmsystems, and Salim Baidoun and @marjanvdk of #tomtom welcomed more than 20 map enthusiasts in TomTom's Amsterdam office.

Salim and Marjan presented TomTom’s OSM Engagement team and how it contributes to #openstreetmap, while Stéphane De Greef of @osm_be wowed the audience with how he mapped all of Brussels with just a bike, cell phone and camera.

It was a great night of learning, networking and … #maps of course.

UPS delivered the #Tomtom satnav today - in fact a whole new unit as they were apparently unable to repair it (so maybe there is a batch of these with faulty battery management?)

OTOH the exact same model I bought in 2019 when I got my first car is still working well, so there appears to be a quality control issue with newer ones.

Satnav is now back with the end user, at least the cloud storage kept all the waypoints (and Tomtom updated it with the new device serial number!) >>

The #TomTom satnav is finally on its way back - ironically it has travelled far more km and visited far more countries than the fleet car it came from will ever do!

Hopefully they have actually fixed the problem after all this time. Its currently in #Essex, but still estimated delivery for 1 September even though its now only 1,5 hours drive away from here..

@Dylan @John generally speaking, some authorities might provide information directly, or indirectly (websites, social media posts etc.), but it’s usually human interaction that closes a road.

Normal traffic flow is measured mostly by mobile device “probe” data shared with map providers (Here, TomTom, Google), and also those rings in the road on freeways and major roads. This was largely pioneered for the mass market by #TomTom in 🇳🇱 who remain one of the best today.

D'oh! I was cursing #TomTom for enshittifying the cloud service associated with their #satnavs as my real time traffic and stored places wasn't working on the move - but for some inexplicable reason a #Xiaomi mobile phone I use as a backup device and hotspot had got mobile data shut off.

This still permits the hotspot to be activated without any warning which makes absolutely 0 sense) - but of course the navi can't access these services as there is no valid IP route w/o LTE data!

#Brexit bullshit: A #TomTom satnav bought for one of our fleet cars has a defective accu. After some days I get their support to approve an RMA - but their repair is outsourced to a company in #Romania

As I registered the MyDrive account to the endusers name and email (to preserve the privacy of data for GDPR); she now has to sign 3 (three) sets of export paperwork in her name and present these along with the satnav to the UPS parcel point (rather than me just dropping off the box)

Maps are one of the most expensive types of data.

Flying back home after spending the last couple of days in Richmond, Virginia for #SOTMUS2023 with my #tomtom #osm enthusiasts. It was my first State of the Map in the US and it did not disappoint!
