Rare glimpse into the #medieval #masonry behind a stone on top of the portal to the Bishop's Entrance, at the choir of Stavanger #Cathedral.

The stone was removed due to a high degree of damage and stored in a safe place. The stonecarvers make a new stone, keeping the building alive, and securing the continuation of the #tradition.

Note the white lime lumps of the #limemortar and the #toolmarks on the #soapstone elements. The blackened stone is probably kept/re-used after the fire of 1272.
