@cynicalsecurity hypercubes quickly ran into scaling issues -- the nCube/2 also couldn't expand beyond the number of router ports, so it stagnated around 1K nodes. meanwhile the mesh and torus topologies could keep adding cabinets so that we could build larger capability machines (and keep our place on the #top500)

The #TOP500 list of the most powerful #supercomputers is out! And the supercomputer Levante from the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) ranks 60 🥳. Levante is the only supercomputer in Germany used solely for #ClimateResearch. Its high performance allows researchers to run simulations with high-resolution Earth system models 🌍.

If so I don't know that El Cap is competing with Aurora for 1st place on #Top500, considering it's "only" slated to be 2.x Eflops Rmax

I'm still disappointed to not see any of the Chinese exascale systems on the latest top500 list. :/

Really impressed by some of the MS numbers in #top500 with dedicated HPC systems within Azure

The #hpc #top500 is out again.

While in someways it is nice to see two European systems in the top 5, it’s worth remembering that the terms of the #EuroHPC deal are very restrictive (the UK cannot play) and Europe has invested far less in software than it has in hardware.

Most communities can’t make much use of these behemoths. It’s not just a matter of porting (which itself may not be trivial), but some algorithms just don’t have enough easily accessible parallelism.

That reminds me. I need to read my updated copy of #RollingStone #Top500 Albums of All-Time 😉😁🌈

Until 2001, my notebook would have made it in the #TOP500 supercomputer list. In summer 1993, it would have been the fastest supercomputer on Earth.

Luke, you make some excellent points.

It seems the folks running the #Top500 accept systems that submit HPL numbers regardless of how they are used.

I have grappled with this question myself - is it a #supercomputer based on capability even if it never runs a #HPC workload in real use?

This November, it wasn’t just the turkey that got stuffed!

Lenovo continues stuffing the latest #Top500 list with non-HPC systems

They had the majority of new systems on the list with 24 of the new 41 systems being Cascade Lake and Ethernet systems

It greatly helps Lenovo’s numbers and ability to say it has a leadership showing in the Top500
