The idea, #Google hopes, is that #Topics will survive privacy legislation that bans "compiling a dossier" style #adtech #tracking
They are piloting it now to see if it works. Because of Google's dominance over the browser ecosystem with #Chrome and over online advertising generally, they're the only entity in a position to do something like this.

So if you are:
A queer, pregnant woman living in Dercatur, IL who runs a business restoring old cars, likes folk music, and recently came into a small inheritance that's tied up in probate
Current #adtech #tracking (probably) knows all this about you. Eek!
All #Google #Topics will know about you is that you like antique/classic cars, not anything about your sexual orientation, your pregnancy status, or your money situation. By design.

So it's significant that @leo and #stevegibson who are #Firefox fanboys and adblocking evangelists have a broadly positive take on #Google #Topics (they still prefer Firefox!).
They suspect that Google sees the writing on the wall. As demands for #privacy online grow louder and legislation follows, Google wants to be prepared, so they're working on a compromise.

Here’s a pretty good summary of how #Topics works, in relatively plain language, from a source that isn’t #Google.
Note that the Topics are relatively generalized and pretty anodyne…and instead of being retained forever, they disappear on a rolling basis after 3 weeks.
As things stand, trackers collect over 1000 points of information about you and retain that information forever in repositories you don’t know about.

If you are upset about the rollout of #Google #Topics and the #privacysandbox in #chrome and are considering #apple #safari instead, or advising people to use Safari instead, etc… Safari has been doing basically the same thing for years now.
This is not to say that what Safari does is bad. It’s to say that you should take a few deep breaths and do some reading.

If you have been following us for a while, you know that we like to speak up against unethical practices.
Let's be frank: spying on people's behavior is wrong, and browsers should not #track or #profile its users. Period. :tony_unhappy:
If you agree with us, know that there are alternatives. Our mission is to stay true to our users and respect their privacy, and that's why we have disabled #Google #Topics API and made sure it doesn't work in Vivaldi. 🔥

@arstechnica Privacy Badger blocked 10 potential trackers on the Arstechnica website. But the question is, how would we like websites to finance themselves? #topics #google
I don’t know when we’ll get robust privacy legislation at the federal level but California, Illinois, and Connecticut already have it. I’m sure more states will pass similar laws. #Topics is #Google offering up a reasonable (arguably) compromise with those laws.
It’s not super-invasive like the status quo of tracking ~1,100 data points about you including your health and pregnancy status. /2
Take it from someone who’s actually read the spec: the #Google #Topics ad targeting system isn’t actually the big scary bugaboo a lot of people are making it out to be. It protects privacy much better than existing methods of tracking for ad targeting (and data brokering).
Google is doing this because they’ve read the writing on the wall: they can’t operate in the EU like they do in the US, and their days of operating like they currently do in the U.S. are numbered. /1

Tropical Storm Idalia continues to strengthen as it moves northward towards the Gulf Coast. The very warm waters across the Gulf of Mexico have caused the system to do so faster than anticipated. Tropical watches and warnings have already been issued for portions of the Florida coastline and a Florida landfall appears to be more likely. #idalia #hurricane #topics #nhc #tropicalstorm

More helpful than #bookmarks & #notes & following #hashtags: search for the #people who work extensively on the #topics that matter to you, and who seem to value what you value, too.
Follow them, even if their accounts are small. Put them on your "Daily" list.
