Toronto Instutions: 76 Pembroke St is still standing in the east end. Pembroke House YWCA was reportedly the first shelter for battered women in Toronto. Of YWCA boarding houses, this one, I have been told took no attitude from the angry husbands when protecting the women inside. This was a safe place women were confident they would not be turned away.

The find: I found it going through old photos at an antique market.
