This is excellent news!

Talks to combine two of the biggest newspaper publishers in have fallen apart.

Network Canada Corp. and LP — the majority owner of the and dozens of other smaller newspapers — announced last month that they had entered into non-binding discussions about possibly merging together.

The / thing today has Canada's in the again.

I think it goes at the ass-backwards. The competition watchdog is at the wrong place in the workflow to accomplish much. By the time a is announced, it's essentially too late for a to have a meaningful impact on things.

(Very) occasionally it'll block a or , but that's reactive at best.

We need a pro-active approach.

Yeah, that figures. If we are going to have newspapers owned by capitalists - and that's not necessarily the worst idea given that SLAPP suits are a thing and lawyers are expensive - better a Bailão supporter than a Maxime Bernier supporter. Paul Rivett can feck off, and apparently has, back into his money or vast carelessness or whatever.

That's not just a hypothetical risk: in , Big Tech entered into negotiations with the ** - the country's widest-circulating paper - ahead of a proposed that was working its way through Parliament. Once that settlement was reached, the *Star* abruptly killed "Defanging Tech" its *excellent* critical series on the tech giants it had just climbed into bed with:

A delay by Ontario Premier to engage in discussions about how to end so-called “” protests paralyzing the national capital last year amounted to a message that city residents had been abandoned by their provincial government during a time of crisis, a federal report concluded Friday."

thestar.com/news/gta/2022/12/2 This story appeared about a month ago, but I have to say it seems pretty lame. More clickbait than news. If the Toronto Parking Authority plans to increase the number of EV chargers, that's news. But here we get a focus on a single owner - one out of some 2.8-million people in the city - who's upset because he bought an EV with apparenty no thought to where he was going to charge it. Sorry, guy, but what a non-story.

I really appreciated this lovely article in today's Toronto Star on so many levels. It's about a painting of "a flock of flame-coloured sheep" that connected these two families across generations. The reflections on supporting independent artists are 💖 too.
