Today is National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day. I love this year's theme: Little Voices, Loud Futures.

There's not many #Aboriginal and/or #TorresStraitIslanders on Mastodon, but a significant proportion are on aus.social
I'm sure everyone who is not a racist would like to see Mastodon become less white. And I'm not the only one missing #BlackfullaTwitter
Changes to collective culture on here won't magically happen. And it won't happen without white people getting their shit together.
Inviting more #Indigenous people to join Mastodon is not the solution. Not when they'll be hit by a wall of whiteness. Or subjected to white moderates' pearl-clutching, reply guys' unsolicited opinions, inconsiderate "allies" posting uninformed opinions & articles on the Local Timeline.
Yes, I know we experience all of that on twitter, and other online spaces. But we have built a large, visible Blak presence in those spaces. We support each other, and push back against racists and paternalistic settlers.
What can non-Indigenous people do to make this space more inviting? -
1 Add Content Warnings when sharing articles and your opinions about Indigenous issues and peoples.
2 Listen to First Nations people; and resist the urge to reply.
3 Do not use the reply function to whitesplain, derail conversations, or centre whiteness/yourself.
4 Reflect on your actions; recognise your own power & privilege, and how you help uphold systemic racism/whiteness.
5 Call out racists in your circle. Even the "nice" ones.
6 Don't use hashtags created by Indigenous people to connect with each other.

["Allies" please don't reply :nocookie: ]
Hey mob: ie #Aboriginal #TorresStraitIslanders
If you see any of the usual January white nonsense and racism that we're used to experiencing on other platforms - report that shit.
Same goes for unsolicited or reply guy comments about You Know What - report that shit.
I can't speak for other mod teams, but aus.social are really good at actioning reports. And we quickly give the boot to racists.
aus.social has mods who are mob; and the team listens to us.
Don't forget to select "forward report". And add context in the report so those other Instances' mods understand what the issue is (eg racism, racialised micro-aggression, gaslighting, sealioning, unsolicited comment, targeted harassment, anti-Indigenous)
If you're itching for the biggest mob, they're here, on aus.social. So move your account over here if the Instance you're isn't properly moderated.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are still a small, mostly inactive, minority on Mastodon. But we are here, and proudly part of Indigenous Mastodon.
If interested, below are some First Nations people to follow. (Not a complete list)
It's probably not a coincidence that many of us are on aus.social This instance now has two Aboriginal moderators > 20% of the mod team are mob.
(if anyone wants to be added to this public list, I can edit it. I also keep a private list)

I’ve never seen a #ContentWarning like this before on a tv show. I’m really interested in learning more about it if someone has more info

I haven't shared a children's book recently. So here's The First Scientists: Deadly Inventions and Innovations from Australia's First Peoples (2021) by Corey Tutt, illustrated by Black Douglas.
Corey has just joined Mastodon, so give him a follow @CoreyTutt
He is the founder and mastermind of Deadly Science, a not-for-profit he started to send books and resources to Indigenous students in underfunded remote schools.

"A Torres Strait Islands leader who was part of a landmark climate change legal victory says the COP27 summit agreement and Australia's commitment to a fund for developing countries will do nothing to help his community at the "frontline" of climate change.
Yessie Mosby, a traditional owner from Masig Island, is a member of the "Torres Strait Eight", a group that won a legal case against the Australian government in the UN Human Rights Committee for climate change inaction."
