On April 6, 1917 the United States entered World War I impacting Tottenville.
Staten Island was home to a naval air station, shipbuilding yard, base for the U.S. Navy's submarine fleet and a large military hospital. The war had a major economic impact with the shipbuilding yard providing much-needed jobs and the influx of military personnel.
