Great Albums – 1970s: #TownesVanZandt – #DeltaMommaBlues (1970). Unusually for TVZ, this fourth LP allows glimmers of light to enliven tracks like “Delta Mama Blues” and “Turnstyled, Junkpiled.” But as darkness descends on “Tower Song,” Townes lines up six of his greatest songs, culminating in the self-examining “Rake” and bleak closer, “Nothin’.” Recorded in New York, the LP has a bluesy toughness distinguishing it in the TVZ catalogue.
