Even Small #Towns are Great Here (5 Years in the #Netherlands)

We’ve lived in the Netherlands for 5 years now and we’ve been to a lot of small towns and cities in that time. The thing that surprised us the most is that there’s good urbanism pretty much everywhere.

The Prompt was "A medieval town of timber-framed buildings where every building has a clock tower and a large carriage arch."

Each image has one tower, although none of them has a clock. Carraige arches penetrate the frontage of building to give access to the rear. None of those either.

Those buildings are probably later than medieval too, 16th or even 17th century.

And a local historian who I often chatted with has just appeared on screen in the programme. I spent a year 2003-4 working half time as a #ResearchAssistant on Bob Harris’s Small Towns project. OK, so you have some #shanty #towns, you have #squats, #suburbs, #inner #city #ghettos, commercial streets, highrise buildings, public housing projects, gentrification, hyper-gentrification, and so on.

STORIES OF THE COAST…
Always changing but always the same. I'm borrowing those words from G Wayne Thomas off the Morning of the Earth album because they fit this town I'm writing about. What I mean is that the town is changing but here and there you can pick up the vibe of the place it once was and maybe, here and there, still is.

Is it the same with other towns? I guess so. All it requires to pick up the past in the present is having known the place. And, yes, I did know this little coastal town because my partner worked there I would drive her van to and from it to drop her off and pick her up after work.

Anyway, this is a story about remembering.

Not only does sprawl development cost taxpayers more to build, it costs more to maintain because each home in a typical community of dispersed, single-family homes on big lots needs so much more paved street, drainage water, sewage, and other services than a home in a denser, more walkable place.
