After coming to the #Fediverse in the first #TwitterMigration when the man child started burning down the house, I was disoriented. I was there for 15 years. #TownSquare is no joke. I missed it—for a while.

Now I’m slightly settled in, learning the ropes and I absolutely love it here. The overall sense of #goodness is so refreshing. This #noob appreciates a feed full of cats, art, fandoms, opinions, news, trees and whatever else people are tooting about. Such #Joy!

Thinking about #TownSquare, #activitypub (AP), #mastodon, #ValueFlows (VF), and getting from current #predatorycapitalism to where?

One vision of "where" comes from a book titled "Ecotopia" by Ernest Callenbach originally published in 1975. It describes the SF Bay Area, specifically Redwood City, 25 years after Calif., Ore., and Wash., split from the US to create an ecologically sustainable society. Of course, there's also the vision of KSR in "The Ministry for the Future" (TMFTF) with a bit of an earlier view of the messy transition out of the extractive economy. Any decent town has a whole bunch of different types of squares, serving a whole bunch of different purposes.
Some are good, some are bad; some only come alive at 1 a.m., with carousers leaving a terrible mess behind.

I want somewhere to sip my beer and chat with friends, ideally with as few #Nazis around as possible. The ideal #TownSquare, in my mind, is a place for the occasional serious discussion but mostly just a chill place to hang out—a place, crucially, not owned by any one person or corporation.
